Hi everyone!

I am headed down to Ron Newton’s shop for a one week class with him and I thought you all would like to see the first in a new series of videos. These are on my progress working towards making and testing my Mastersmith Performance Test knife. I hope you all like these and I would like to thank my brother Caleb for shooting and editing this video. Also I would like to say that somewhere in one of these videos I say that the MS performance test knife can break up to 2/3 the way towards the spine when it is bent; that info is incorrect the test knife is only allowed to break up to 1/3 the way towards the spine of the blade.

I will post another video when I get back Sunday or Monday, 7th or 8th.

Thanks for watching

Kyle great video thanks for taking the time to put them together I have enjoyed your other videos as well.

And good luck when you go take the test.

Very cool Kyle! :)

I'm sure you will have zero problem passing, but good luck just because! :)

Kyle, that is a lot of fun to watch, thanks for doing this. I'm very much looking forward to the sequels :)

Excellent video Kyle. Watching red hot steel being forged has a mystical quality about it. Sort of like staring at a campfire!

I'm sure you will be successful in your test for mastersmith.

Great video work by Caleb as usual.

Kyle,

Thanks for sharing. With your talent and Ron as a coach you should have no problems when it comes to testing time.

Nice tip on wetting the initial billet with kerosine. I've often wondered about the initial heat prior to fluxing.

I really like the combo dies that you have on your press as well. I'm sure that they save a lot of time.

Keep up the good work.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the compliments.

I am sorry I didn't post the next video like I said last Monday, I ended up staying at Ron Newton's house an extra day deer hunting. I had a great time learning from Mr. Newton this past week. I learned so much from him that my head was and still is spinning from information overload. I am really looking forward to putting as much of what I learned into my knives as I can.

This is the second video of this series and I think Caleb did a great job on it. I hope you all like it and thanks for watching.

Click here to see the video.

Kyle,

You should be on "Dancing With the Stars!" No, make that "Dancing with the Smiths." "The Royer Hydraulic Press Boogie!" LOL I don't think I'm coordinated enough to run your press. I think we'd all like to have a little song with the dance in the next instalment.

Glad to see you utilizing your safety equipment. Regards to your brother. He's doing a great job. I could never have worked with my brothers. We were too busy fighting all of the time. Y'all keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Great video, I learn a lot just by watching but when I try to go that fast I make lots and lots of mistakes.....Seriously, thanks for taking us all along on this journey Kyle.

I was thinking the same as Roger. Sometimes knifemaking videos can get a little tedious at times, the speeded up sequences make it very 'watchable'.

You also make it all look very easy (which of course it isn't!)... the sign of a true craftsman.

Very impressive indeed.

Kyle,

Great thread. Thanks to both you & Caleb for the video. :D Working the foot pedals on your press takes a special talent. Nice job. I look forward to more. Thanks for posting.

Kyle, this is really a great set of videos. Congratulations to Caleb, great job. Very nice WIP for everyone. One question, do you preheat your dies in the press? Oh, and you really need to get a hold down for the dies so you don't have to keep pushing them back in. Sorry I could not resist. Really nice Kyle.

Really educational and enjoyable to watch Kyle.
Thank you and Caleb for taking the time and effort to include us.

such a cool video! Really enjoyed that.

No, I don't preheat my dies. They do heat up very quick after I start forging.

Yes, I do need to make something to hold the top die in. :o

Thanks for the complements on the video everyone! My brother Caleb started leaning the guitar about five months ago and he is really taking off with it. The music you hear in the beginning intro is of Caleb's making.

Well I better head out to the shop and see if I can get some work done today.

Thanks, Kyle
