My Mauser

Hi Yvsa:

I didn't realize I posted this on the HI forum. I'm sorry for that. I meant to post on the Cantina. Thanks for moving it. I've been tired and not up to par lately. Finding this Mauser got me thinking about it. I'll clean the cosmolene off it, but a box of ammo now that I know what it shoots and hopefully go shoot it next weekend.

No problem Steve, that's one of the things we're here for.;)

Have fun with your Mauser, sure wish I had one but all I've got is an old SMLE.;) :D
That is for any longer range stuff. The .30-30. AK 47, and the Marlin .357 Magnum are all for shorter range stuff, perfect fer Oklahoma. :D

Hi DD:

I must be doing something wrong. I get a page not found error when I try your link. Could it be misspelled?

Try the link now. It had too many 'http' on it.

Some 30,000 m/96 rifles were rebarreled at the Carl Gustaf factory beginning in 1938 with a 24.5 inch barrel to make the rifle handier for the foot soldier. The shorter barrel and the adoption of the new m/94/41 cartridge with the 139 grain spitzer bullet required that the rifle be equipped with a new rear sight. A quantity of new rear sights were manufactured for the m/96-38 by a local firm, but it proved more economical and-with a little training-just as effective to simply attach a metal plate or paper decal to the butt stock which gave the soldier a chart by which to quickly calculate the amount of hold "over" or "under." These decals or plates were attached to the stocks after the adoption of the new cartridge in 1941, see Figure 8. They were attached upside down so that the shooter could read them with the rifle at the shoulder simply by rotating the stock to the left.

Best rifle I own. Superbly accurate, gentle on the shoulder, and produced by the finest craftsmen ever know. Mine is a 1909 carl gustav. I'm gonna do something special in 2009 for her centenial.
The 6.5X55 is probably the finest hunting cartridge the world has ever seen. Short of large, dangerous, game it fits the bill for almost all other hunting applications.

Steve, cosmoline is gawdaful stuff but spray brake cleaner from the auto parts store works pretty good, that and engine cleaner. Don't forget to disssemble the bolt- firing pin may/will be gunked-in.

As soon as the parts are clean, coat with Ballistol or something like it- Break free is good but more $.

It takes me 2 nights to un-cosmo an SKS, I can tell you that. It's like the guns are dipped in the La Brea Tra pits. Better that than rust, but still.

Hi Guys:

The new link worked fine. Good information.

I think I'll remove the cosmoline this weekend. Don't know about taking a bolt apart though.

Can anyone decipher the rest of the medallion?

It IS a shame you are starting at the top of the milsurp food chain!

The only place to go from here, is to find some nice SWISS rifles, the OTHER neutral state!

Of course, you will then want Finnish Nagants, SKS, Enfields, Garands...

:D

Don't worry, that bulky wallet will lighten up soon enough!

Welcome to the next most dangerous addiction after HIKV!

Tom

ps you have my condolences!!

Some of the pre-war "Contract Mausers" are pretty sweet. I have a 7mm Lowe that could not be topped for bluing or metal-to-wood by anything else I have ever seen.

When I see those beauties with the crests ground off or "sporterized," I have to choke back the sobs. :(

You've got a treasure and the best of the best. Your Swede deserves the same treatment that you would give to your irreplaceable hunting dog.
The Samco Swedes and unissued Persian Mausers are the creame of the crop in Milsurplus rifles.
To see current values check out website" Auction Arms."

Hi Tom:

Oops, I also got Norinco SKS, AK, Garand, M-1 Carbine. 03 Springfield, Mosin Nagant (Chinese type 53), etc.

A K31 is next.

Darn it Clearblue, now I've got to get a Persian Mauser. Fortunately collecting never ends. I'm puzzeled which hunting dog to get though.
