Okay guys, story time.....

Today, well yesterday now (4-16-08 wednesday) my campus, Texas A&M University Kingsville aka TAMUK, was put on lockdown as a car full of illegal immigrants was chased into town by the border patrol and State Troopers. We were all told to lock the buildings and stay put in our class rooms until further notice. This is what we were told at 3:30 pm. We slowly found out information from our friends and family about what was going on. They knew more than us and we were the ones stuck on campus, go figure.

Well, as the day dragged on, nothing to do but homework and bladeforums doesn't work on campus *sigh*, we discovered that it was 12 immigrants that had a man driving them here at gun point and they ended up near our campus. 10 had been captured but two remained, one of which was armed and desperate. Once this was discovered (courtesy of my GF of course) I reached for my pocket to find my comfort object, only to discover that I had been carrying my Benchmade Griptilian and my Millie was in my bag. So at first I thought, "$hit, a real SHTF situation and I'm stuck with my griptilian." Then I figured that when the teacher wasn't looking I'd just swap out my grip for the Millie. The swap went smoothly and only my friend saw what happened. He said,"if someone comes through that door, you'd better let me use that other knife you just put up."

I felt very comforted to know that I had my Millie by my side once again, and that let me know that (until I get my D'allara) the Millie is "The One" for me.

Almost forgot to finish the story....:D
We all bought snacks from the vending machine and the Professors put on movies for us in the lab rooms. It turned out to be a fun SHTF situation, nobody was hurt as far as I know, and we were finally released at 6:30 pm. Now keep in mind that my class had started at 2:30pm so my butt was stuck in the same room for 4 hours :grumpy:. The two remaining men were captured and we were allowed to go home.

I just thought that this would be appropriate here since it was my Millie that was my "comfort object" which I would have gladly used if necessary to defend my classmates (and the professor if it would have guaranteed me an "A" ;)) and my a$$. Kind of ironic how they happened to do that on the anniversary of Virginia Tech, at first we all thought it was a copy cat attack, but we learned that it was illegal immigrants with a gun.

Any viewpoints on this, or anybody consider their Spyderco knife an object of comfort which you reach for in a time of TSHTF?

Glad you are all safe. These days you never know what can and does happen. If you can't carry a gun, and we can't in most places, the Millie is a comfort.

I get comfort at 0400 hrs when I'm walking the dog and see a car full of strangers cruising the neighborood slowly. So far no incidents but the Endura and cara cara permantly assigned to my dog walking jacket is very comforting. though my dog is a beast I feel the urge to protect him, not the other way around, Joe

LOL, I hear what you are saying about protecting the dog first. My Beagle would freak and probably outrun me if TSHTF. She is a good possum hunter though, when she's chasing those she's real "tough."

Thanks, I'm glad no one was hurt (again, that I am aware of), once the dust settles then the real news comes out. I think yesterday I made two knife nuts out of my group members. I even offered to sharpen peoples knives in class (yes, I carry two types of smith's sharpeners with me). I showed them my "quality" knives and they were impressed. They really liked the G-10 handles on the Millie. I think I made two spyderco nuts :D, and yesterdays situation was a good a time as any to convince them that carrying a legal tool/self defense weapon is a good idea.

Hey man just glad no one was hurt, in this crazy world a millie is a very comforting object. Whether its S30V, S90V or BG-42 they all do their job very well. O yah and D2...

If I'm not carrying it in pocket, my Para is ALWAYS in my backpack. Never know what might happen. I always keep the Para, Surefire, Gerber multitool, and first aid kit on hand. We also have a big earthquake threat in San Francisco, even more reason to be prepared.

sleep well buddy!

I would rather have my 1911 model (with my CCW). This is a good argument to allow legal CCW's to carry on campus. Keep in mind a good description beats a gunfight any day. Although a knife is better than nothing, formal knife training is more important. (and yes I have taken the time for formal defensive pistol)

Having a knife rather than not having a knife is always a good thing, especially if we know that we have a quality tool available to us. Not to devalue this experience in any way, but for me, the comfort comes from my training. Knowing how to really break down someone's body is going to be more comforting to me than having a knife with no training.

But in either case, training or not, I'd love to have a Mili by my side.

I asked a knife dealer in Texas, what knife does he carry. Answer>Colt .45! Talk about comfort.

If I'm not carrying a fixed blade and the idea of self-protection and preservation even comes into the equation, the Military or Paramilitary gets slipped into my pocket. IMHO no folder draws faster than a practiced hand on a Military or Para.
