Since the good folks here are posting pics of their new knives, I thought I'd share my rescued Mini Bolo. It was in my sister-in-laws garage when she bought her house. I mentioned that I liked it so she gave it to me yesterday.

Its a Dexter Russell Sani-Safe kitchen knife that had been abused by the previous owner. You can still see that it was sharpened on a bench grinder at one point.

I took it out to the garage today and convexed the edge on the bench belt sander with some 320. Cleaned up the surface rust with some P500 sandpaper by hand.

Gave it a quick chopping test where it went through 3/4" branches with little effort. The blade is just over 9" and relatively thick for a kitchen knife. The handle is textured for a slip-free grip. Overall its a tough little knife.

Not bad for free and maybe ten minutes of clean up. Not sure what I'll do with it from here. It'll probably go in the car camping gear and maybe take care of a little yard work on weekends.

Thanks for lookin,
Chris

i have a large old butcher knife that has a similar profile that i use for splitting pegs and kindling and for small hacking.

they make for good all around mini machetes.

looks like a good job on yours

Those Dexter Russell knives are kind of like American Moras. Extremely common in professional kitchens, good quality. I've had my eye on their fish splitter for a while. The grind, thickness, length all seem to suggest something along the lines of machete-like performance. A wee bit on the pricey side, though.
