So, Christmas has come and gone, saw the in-laws and had a good time. Didn't get to see Mom, but she sent me some presents....click on the pic to get the super-sized version...

Not much for scale in that pic, but the big pieces at the top are about 2"x10-12".

Looks like I gotta get busy in the shop :)

Quite a nice Mom there, deker! Nice stuff. What's the third in from the bottom left?

Well, everybody knows, "Only a mother would love him.", was said about deker.
Nice gift !

Middle right seems to have marked out its own handle shape ,I though I had trouble choosing what piece to try next.

If we're talking about the same piece (crotch wood, white and red two-tone) that one is Chakta-Kok, aka Redheart. There's a bunch of stuff in here I'd have never thought to buy like canarywood, Mexican Green Verdecillo (never even heard of that one), and Jamacian Blue Mahoe (never heard of it before...but say it out loud, it's fun! :) ). One eBay seller she bought a bunch from even threw in a freebie and the Leopardwood (2nd row, all the way left) was thrown in in for free as a "present for your son".

None of it is stabilized, so all but the ironwood burl, cocobolo, and ziricote are likely to go to K&G shortly. Should I stabilize the bocote as well? I suppose I'll ask the folks at K&G what they think about that...

What more could a boy ask for? Mom saw me wood shopping on eBay once and then she went nuts with it herself. I did manage to find out that the cocobolo burl (yes...BURL...sideways at the top left) is her favorite so that will likely be on either next year's birthday or christmas present for her.

I'll take the 1rst one in the top row and the far right one in the second row, do you take paypal?

Michael

Yeah, What is that bright red stuff on the bottom row. If you send it to me I'll show you what I can do with it! I got some wood too, Tooth picks! Nice Gift!

you should have a contest, whoever can correctly name all the different types of wood gets there choice of 2 sets absolutly free! I'll take the 1rst one in the top row and the far right one in the second row.;)

Deker, not only does your mom love 'ya, she's got some incredibly great taste!

Or at least some insightful elves to help her in the selection department! :D

Fitz, you know we have zero tolerance for politically incorrectness!!!!!

Just look at me, I am a shining example of perfection.

Er...uh... Political perfection...

Er... wait... Um.... DAMN IT!!!

WTF WAS I SAYING!?!?! LMAO ;)

Mom has a degree in interior design, and me as her son. She's good at seeing the potential in things that are a little rough. ;)

I'm going to spoil Michael's little game here and name stuff. Starting at the top row, left to right:

Top Row: Black Ash Burl, Spalted Tulip Poplar, Cocobolo burl above the Poplar, Cocobolo, Bocote, Cocobolo, Bocote, Cocobolo, Cocobolo
Middle Row: Leopardwood, Mexican Green Verdecillo, Canarywood, Canarywood, Zircote (these are like 5/8 thick! I'm thinking thin hidden tangs..), Purpleheart, Myrtle
Bottom Row: Ironwood burl, Jamaican Blue Mahoe, Redheart, Bloodwood, Redheart

I'm going to have to make some full tang and/or mortised tang stuff now...

-d

P.S. Fitzo, political correctness will NOT be tolerated! :)

Jamaican Blue Mahoe? Nobody would hav got that. I was just goofing around with you Mr. Deker. Thats some very nice material.

Fitz, What were you going to post? I wont tell anyone.

Nick, I dont even know what to say to you, I miss your posts, i wish you would do it more often

Michael

.......Fitz, What were you going to post? I wont tell anyone....

Michael

It was really quite impertinent, something about "Jamaican" and testing the board before sending it off. Having come of age at the turn of the 70's, it was mostly just funny to me. :)

You guys don't really think I worry excessively about politically correct do you? :p

Now that I've told you, Michael, don't tell anyone.....

All I know is that I'm just sitting here staring at all the crotches and knotholes. :o

Okay, I'm done staring now.

Your mom rocks! Nice stuff. I guess we can expect some exceptional cutlery from you in the months ahead.

Also, I think that we can expect your mom to get the first one that you make. Something nice for her kitchen maybe!!

Yeah Nick, what Michael said...where have you gone? Come back and talk to us more....

Fitzo, if it hadn't been explained in that "well, here, let me explain the joke to you after the fact" kind of way, *I* would have thought it was funny. C'mon man, cut loose a little every now and then.... :D

Yup, Mom will likely be getting a kitchen knife, though I'll be afraid to sharpen it before I send it. She has a bad track record with kitchen knives that are actually sharp. I may have to give her a class in safe knife use so she can avoid more stitches....
