My "Monster" rifle Idea

Another vote for the FAL. It was the UK SLR (no auto option) in 7.62 I fired. Acceptable kick, accurate to reasonable ranges, heavy enough bullet to stop an enemy in his tracks.

If my country allowed it - I would have one. Unfortunately I have no real reason to own one.

in 1940 I would have preferred a bolt action over one of those new fangled thingimys.

For the WWII ground-pounder, the Garand is god's own rifle.
No more likely to jam than a bolt gun in my re-enacting through the years. You would not think a bolt gun will jam, but they do, and they are mostly slower to reload. The Carcano is fast to load, the Garand uses the same en-block clip idea.
The Germans at one event decided to try the "charge when you hear the clip ping" idea. I could see something was up, so I ran six off fast, dumped the clip into my hand to keep it quiet, reloaded. Shot two off fast and bounced the empty clip of my helmet...
And it WORKED :-)
Three Germans got up and rushed, BlamBlam, Blamblam, Blamblam-Ping...
funny stuff.
I still like the Johnson MG for squad support.

well danny, it may be small comfort, but the heart of the BAR lives on today, in belgian, british, and american soldiers' hands.

The FN MAG alias m240A/B/C/G etc is a derivative of the BAR. Seems like the Fabrique Nationale Herstal took your idea in the opposite direction.

I'll echo a previous statement and go with the Bren for preferred auto, in any case. Those czechs really know how to design a firearm.

One very simple thing that could've been done to improve the US service rifle of the era would've been to simply not knock the legs out from under the .276 Pederson based merely on opinion, and in defiance of actual test results. One less redesign would've meant Garand getting it working that much more quickly, the rifle would've arguably performed better, and US military doctrine and small arms development most likely would've leapfrogged a decade or more.

Would've, could've, should've, right? :)

Friggin' MacArthur. If I could go back in time, he'd be about #2 on my list (after Hitler) of people in the 20th Century that needed assassinating. He cost the lives of thousands of soldiers, disobeyed orders on several occasions, and almost caused WWIII*. His actions, and the resulting ripple effects through the higher echelon military community in the U.S., caused many of the problems in Vietnam. Charming fellow, really...

Ive been reading up on the Japanese Service Rifle on Wikipedia,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howa_Type_89

You cant get one due to Japan's export laws, stinks for them cause they would sell a gazillion of them if they implemented the same innovation they did on their automobiles.

However, read up about it. It seems that the Japanese have a really hard time getting their boys in the service good stuff.

Personally, after reading that and reading about the Korean rifle
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daewoo_K2

I think I would rather have the Korean Service Rifle just cause of the interchangability of the magazines, and the piston driven system. The gun show us guys went to saw them for about the price of a ar-15. It is Korea's next step after the AR-180.

Just thought yall would like to hear about those sort of things. ;)

Time to go figure out what I am going to do with my Tax refund, gotta buy American, that means Firearms. :p
