Well thanks to Elen's post in the thread "Teach Me About Scandinavian Knives", I have finally been pushed over the edge. I absolutely have to know what these knives are all about. Since they're so inexpensive, I decided to try out a few different Moras. Here is the order I just placed a minute ago.

Frosts® Morakniv™ Classic with Red Birchwood Handle (Half Guard)
Frosts® Morakniv™ Carbon Viking with Red Composition Handle
Frosts® Morakniv™ Scout with Black Composition Handle
Frosts® Carbon 4" Clipper Knife with Black/Red Thermoplastic Rubber Handle Frosts® 4" Mora Craftsmen Knife with Oval Red Wood Handle
Frosts® Morakniv™ 2000 with Rubber Handle

I think out of these, I'll at least find a few that I won't know how I ever lived without. lol. You guys have put me in it once again. ;)

The Mora 2000 is the "top" Mora, made specifically to be a survivalish Mora knife. A lot of people like it a lot.

Just remember - if you don't like those Moras, it's not because you don't like Scandi knieves, it's because you don't like cheap Scandi knives. There's a gargantuan difference in quality between a cheap Mora and a handmade puukko (and the latter is still not as expensive as a lot of the tactical knives, even folding ones!)

There is a long standing tradition that you give everyone on the forum a knife when you're a newbie, RIGHT GUYS? :D :thumbup::thumbup::cool:

How long do you have to be here before you're not a newbie anymore. Tell me without looking at my join date. lol. I would if I could afford it. You guys are a wealth of knowledge worth far more than the price of a Mora.

Your in DEEP trouble now my friend. I had to go through at least 12 different Moras before I found the one. Now everyone in my family has at least one. My wife thought I was starting an internet knife dealership of sorts.

The 510 is still my undisputed favorite. My hiking partner (7 yo daughter) thinks "it's pretty"!

She's gorgeous bro. What she says goes. hahaha. I know I say it all the time on here, but I'm (not so) patiently waiting for the wife to give me a couple little ones to take camping and such. She's not near as interested in the woodsy stuff as I am, so I'm trying all the time to talk her into letting me make some interested people. ;)

Thanks!!!!

If you notice that stick she is holding, it's a "hawk fightin' stick". She watched one of those wildlife shows with me on the Discovery channel once. A hawk swooped down and took out a bunny. She was none to please.

so that stick is her "hawk fighter". Bears are ok......cougar are fine, but hawks...... no good at all in her opinion.:o

HAHAHA! That is awesome.

To this day my wife prefers the Frost Clipper to any other knife. The ergonomics are spot on.

Dale, between this and rescuing scantily-clad wimmins, I'm liking your sense of humor. I'll bet you'd be a hoot to toss beers back with. LMAO!

:D

Ok. I recieved my order today. I immediately fell in love with the 4" Mora Craftsmen Knife with Oval Red Wood Handle. I absolutely love that knife. I went outside right off the bat and found a nice piece of pine and widdled a 12" bowie knife out of it. These scandis are definitely living up to the hype. As I said I would, I'm wondering how I ever made it without a couple of these. hahaha. I'll post pictures of the wooden bowie after I sand it and stain it.

Had to order one, I will post a pic once it gets here. The price on these little knives is so reasonable!

Nice selection of Moras! Now whatever you do, avoid looking at Hultafors and Marttiini. If you do you'll wind up with a lot more inexpensive quality knives.

the MK2 rule in survival i have bought three gifted one and kept 2 they are outstanding...................................

Mora arrived today! It is a Mora of Sweden. It has a wooden handle that is 4 inches long and a blade 3 7/8ths inches long of polished carbon steel. Ok now comes an important question, should I resist the urge to modify this Mora or use it like it is? (the knifemaker in me really wants to modify!) If you agree that I should, what modifications should I make? or why should I leave it alone? LOL

Here's what I would do...
1. polish back of blade from rough manchine marks
2. make a shallow choil to get edge at least 1/4 inch away from handle
3. drill a thong hole

I have hung out on this forum alot and respect your opinions....

Thanks!

Moras are so cheap they're a really good basis for modifications. I've done a lot of (bad) Mora mods for fun and non-profit. :D If you feel there's something wrong with it, fix it by modding if you can - if one makes a mistake and ruins the knife, it's no big deal at € 2 - 5. :D

One thing, though. Please don't ever put a choil on a Scandi knife. :( They don't belong on these knives at all, and indeed they do nothing but hinder the performance of the knife in precise work (because for maximum control, you want the edge to start as close to your hand as possible, and the hand should be gripping the handle - the closer the handle is to the edge the better the knife will be in precise work, and a choil only serves to make it worse). The only thing you could possibly gain with a choil is making sharpening a little bit easier, and it isn't that hard anyway... There is a reason why no Scandi wood working knives ever have a choil on them - because they're detrimental to performance. Choils are nice in a 9" bowie knife or a 18" machete, but they don't belong on small knives meant for precision work.

Now, I'd agree about the thong hole. Those can be useful especially when fishing and tending to drop stuff in the damn lake. :D

Ditto what Elen said. I personally like that there is no thong hole or anything in the wooden handle Moras. I got a few that came with plastic handles and such with thong holes specifically so I would have some to take in places where a lanyard would be a good idea. That's one very good thing I noticed about Mora. They have one for everybody and every occasion.

I polish the spine and sides on all my Moras, but put a nice sharp, flat on the spine toward the tip for ferro rod striking. They will launch a nice shower of sparks for ya.
