Not trying to throw stones and I am far from being any kind of expert on Batoning but I seem to remember a post here a year or so ago on the proper technique and the damage that could be done to the knife if you did it incorrectly.
I think the main problem that was discussed was putting too much pressure on the handle when the blade was struck and flexing the knife where the tang and the blade meet. Seems like that could have caused this type of failure. where the tang hole was enlarged and allowed the handle to pull off. Just food for thought. ????? Granted this wouldn't happen with a full tang knife. I think the knife tha tbroke was a K-Bar. The tang broke where it me the blade.
