Hey ya'll,
The pictures are finally back from Point Seven, so here goes.
My dagger has a 12" blade and is about 17 3/4" overall. The steel is O1 and 15N20 in a twisted high layer radial. The fitting are the same recipe and the handle is core mammoth w/ 24K gold wire.
The B.R. Hughes winner is a cute little Art Bowie. The blade steel is 1084 and 15N20 in a modification of Steve Dunn's Thorns and Thistles. It has a 6" blade and 10 3/4" OAL. The handle is sambar stag w/ gun blued mild steel furniture.
The Antique Bowie Assoc. winner is my version of a Jonathon Crookes Bowie. The 9 1/2" blade was forged from 5160 round. OAL is 15 1/8". The handle frame is a nickel silver guard and pommel hard soldered to a steel frame. Besides being just way cool, this knife was carried by members of same family through five wars.

Fantastic knives, John. Now I see why that Hughes award was deserved!

Very clear photos from P7. I expect no less. :)

Here are the two remaining knives I submitted for mastersmith judging.
The bowie has a 7 1/2" 1084 blade, 12 3/4" OAL. The hunter has a 4 1/2" blade, O1 and 15N20 in a 1,000+ layer ladder. OAL is 9 1/4". The handle is ringed gidgee.

As good as the photos are, they only hint at how nice the knives were in person. The detail on that little art bowie just blew me away and the sheer presentation quality of the Crooke's bowie was just as impressive. IMO, both awards were well deserved. Just excellent John.

Impressive. I think that they are all great. Very artistic. It is nice to see MS knives that are outside of the box, so to say.

I may never go for my Master's now. How does anyone even come close? Great work I admire your ability to put art and knife making together.

John,

You were my pick for the B.R. Huges award going in. It was anyone's guess as to which of your knives would take it. I really enjoy the way you push the envelope with new ideas together with awesome fit and finish.

Your Crooke's bowie just kills me.

My fave is the Crookes Bowie, but they are all exceptional! Interesting guards on all of them, especially.

I love them all, but something about the ringed gidgee hunter just CALLS to me. ;) :)

It's elegent, yet simple in design. Great work, John.

All were stunning! Congratulations John.

Superb work John, you deserve the awards and plaudits. It was great to meet you and your wife after exchanging e mails!

The Crooks bowie is brilliant, but you also had another piece with a black wood twist handle which was also sublime ...... any chance of a photo of that one?

Cheers,

Stephen

Thanks for all the compliments. My goal going into this thing was to stretch myself, to do things I hadn't done before. While I didn't meet all my objectives, those lofty goals are what put me over the top. I had some folks advise me to be conservative and just get my stamp. Those of you who know me well knew that wasn't going to happen. While I don't suggest that anyone going for their MS stamp do any weird, far-out pieces, I would say BE CREATIVE and have FUN. This is supposed to be fun. You can wait to stress out the week before Blade.
Stephen, I am in the process of building a sheath for that dirk with the fluted handle. I hope to finish soon and shoot some pics then.

Ahhh, the fluted handled dirk. That was the piece that got me in the heart as well. Certainly am looking forward to one of those myself.

Super work John, I can remember when you only made folders, now look at you :) or I thought you only made them.

Here's a more detailed look at John's MS Dagger.

Congratulations again John on your well-deserved success at BLADE this year!

Regarding your stunning dagger - I am impressed with how you fluted the handle by hand using curving lines that constantly change. Somehow you knew to widen the flutes and slow their rate of turning over the wider portions of the ivory.
Attention to details like this one put your knives in a very special category.

I also love the damascus pattern you created for the dagger!

Having known John for a few years, I did not have any doubts about his knives or the awards. John you really do do some extraordinary work. Tell Carrie and Stormy hello.
