Hi all,

Well if you looked at the thread that I started yesterday about my new Woods bumming Trio then you know about the little hatchet and the other 2 knives that I made and called my Trio.

About a year ago Kelly Girl and I was walking long a creek that we have about 1/4 mile east of the farm where I live at. Well I was following Kelly Girl
and noticed that she started to sniff the air and then started to leave the trees and the trail we were on and started walking into the corn field. I was like well ok it was follow Kelly Girl day and so I did lol.

Just about right where I took this

pic was where kelly started to walk to about a year back. This patch of Ceder trees is about as thick and thick and can be and really a very small area. About 50 by maybe another 50 yard. Like I said it really just is a thick nasty patch of ceder trees with a small creek to the south of it and well it just did not dawn on my to go in and check it out.
On one side it has the field and then the other is a pasture.

Ok so Kelly girl just keeps on going towards that little patch of thick over grown ceder trees.

Once we get there I am like there is no way I want to go in there. It is just so thick and the trees are growning so close together I would have to cut a trail. But then I noticed kelly Girl walked inbetween to bigger trees but inbetween then to bigger trees were some littler trees and as I looked into and past them there more trees but this area seemed to have less trees the way kelly Girl walked in I thought there seems to be just a slight wiggley type of trail.
This is the entrance or what I call the entrance lol.

As I walked and pushed my way in and moved some ceder branches I made several right turns and then some left ones an then walked into what was a clear area about 12' by maybe 16' roughly there were some very small ceders growing but other than that is was pretty much cleared.
Here is the pic I took of the little cleared area.

When I seen that area I was like yep this could be a pretty cool set up for a leanto and fire pit. Surrounded by a thick wall of ceders. The plan started to form and I just left it at that until today. I also cound out what had cause kelly girl to search out this area.
A deer had gone in there and died right in that cleared area and kelly Girl could still smell or detect the bones somehow. Even though they were bleached white by the sun. Kelly sniffed and walked around the bones and stuff like that. Then out she went.

As I was making up small all steel hatchet and a knife that was patterned after the knife in E. Kreps camping book. I had already made up a Kephart knife and had been using it for the last month or so.

From top to bottom. The all steel hatchet, below that is the E. Kreps version and then my Kephart version knife.

I really wanted to use that knfie hatchet and Kreps version knife for starting to set up this secret camp of mine.

So out comes my little hatchet. I cut a few branches off a couple of small ceders and then go cut a couple of small ash saplings that I got by the creek for my cross peace. I wired them together and then harvested a bew ceders that looked like they would make great volunteers for the lattice work.
Here is the front view of the leanto. I used some wire and then strands of inner 550 cord to tie and wire the sticks together.
Notice the hatchet and the 2 small yellow and black feathers?
I found them on the ground there today just before I started making the leanto. It was then that the thought came into mind to call this place my 2 feather secret leanto get way lol. Kind of catchy huh lol.

After I had the frame work all done I took out from my pack a plastic drop cloth. I then put it on over the frame work and then tied it off.

I then used the ceder boughs that I had cut from the ceder trees that I cut and put them on the back side of the plastic tarp. One to hold the tarp in place more and 2 to help give it some camo.
Here is the back side and the pic of the boughs on the plastic.

In this pic You can see the front side of the leanto.

Well that is as far as I got today. Next I will take out a canvas tarp and cover the frame work with it. I will get my firepit set up and then get wood brought in.

All in all it was a great day to be out and about. I really like this Trio I am using now.

The Kephart did not get used as much and the Kreps or the hatchet. I will say this though today is the first day in over year and a half that I did not carry a orange handled knife on my right hip. I carred the Kephart and then on the starp of my water bottle pouch I carred the Kreps and then I just carried the hatchet in my right hand most of the day. I just like the way the antler handle feels.

Well what do you all think of the beginnings my 2 Feathers leanto campsite?

Bryan looks like agreat day!!!

My small hatchet is an old Estwing 14a, it carries real well in a back jeans pocket.

Hi all,

Thanks for the comments on my 2 feathers leanto.

Loosearrow, I am with ya this, it will be neat place to slip into and cook up some bacon and other goodies. Thanks, I am pretty happy with this little
hatchet.

Doc Canada, well what did you do?

Wild Mike, Yea it was a pretty good day. That s cool you carry a hatchet also. I do not always carry it but when I do I sure like it too lol. I like my bigger knives too. I like the variety of being able to carry and use the different cutting tools I make.

Grunt Soldier, Thanks, Yea with a few add ons and some more elbow grease I think that are awill be a pretty cool place to have a shelter site at.

Pedervisti, Thanks. The more I use them the more I am really liking them elk antler cutting tools. The last few months I have been on this old timey with newer materials looking kick and just really like getting out in the woods even more.
I have been reading more of the old time camping books. A freind of mine Gizzly Dave has been a wealth of old time camping skills information and stuff like that.

Take care all,

Bryan
