My new anvil

Jealous of Sam's constant flaunting of his many new anvils, I finished my post anvil and mounted it in the backyard on the post we made last year. Baseball season is finally over and Graham wanted to start doing some forging before the weather gets too cold. The anvil is 100# 6" round steel and bolted to the 6x6 post with lag bolts. The 6x6 post is sunk 48" with 3 bags of quikrete. The anvil is sitting on top of a piece of 3/4" horse mat and barely rings. It's barely noticeable from the neighbors house, certainly less annoying than their constantly yapping shih-poo.

Up next is a forge stand rock chips around the anvil post. There's a concrete slab to stand on and everything is under our deck. I'm going to weld a 1" hardy hole (1.5" square tube with 1/4" walls) to the side.

Any thoughts, suggestions, improvement ideas?

It was rust free yesterday before it rained. The bag I had covering it blew off. I'll get it painted and oiled soon.

Looks good Charles! My RR anvil rings so bad I have to wear earplugs or turn my mp3 player up! Do you know what kind of steel it is?

Pretty certain it's 1045 or 4140, but it doesn't matter since I really have no way to HT the whole anvil. Ed at the steel shop couldn't remember what kind it was but thought it was one of those two. It had been sitting in the warehouse for 2 years. I welded handles on to the sides so we could pick it up. It was very difficult to pick it up before the handles. The 1" channel on each side is fully welded. It's designed so that the flexing of the channel toward the 5½" wooden post would pull the anvil tight to the base. I only have 1½" lag screws, but plan to pick up some 3" to really tighten it up.

No paint, pick up some Permatex rust treatment at any auto parts store.Knock off the loose rust and wipe on the Permatex.Gives a very nice dark plum/black finish that is very tough and easy to touch up if needed, just wipe some more on.I used it on a vise I rebuilt and liked it so much I used it on a fab table I built.Gave the table top a nice finish and as a bonus I can use it as a chalkboard with a soap stone pen and just wipe it off when i'm done brainstorming

Pic looks very black but in full sun it has a real nice dark plum sheen to it.
