well, not really. but kinda badger like.

ontario rat3 in d2 (my second favorite steel).

.128 blade thickness, ,492 handle thickness. comes with a bladetech kydex sheath and two carry options, teklok and clip.

i had been eyeing these for a while, and for around 80.00, a great bargain.

very busselike, micarta scales, crinkle type finish, and even the grind looks similar. clearly larger than a gw, but "feels" smaller, and i have med sized hands.

ill take it camping next week and beat it up a little, along with my ruck, daba, fbm, hhfsh, ba-e, and whatever else i can fit in my "knifepack".

the rat 3 is the only rat i have kept..... i have a few laying around the shop for easy access to threaten lazy employees.... but now i got an ak and everyone is working a lil harder...

Sweet score man. I have the Rat-3 in 1095 and i love it. It's nice to see a busse man who likes the RAT line as well.

I have the RAT-7 too its a great knife i've really beat the crap out of it and it still wants more!

Im in the process of getting a Camptramp (not quite a busse but im working my way up). I've heard I'll really feel the difference between the RAT and CT

well.... hate to disagree...... but i have broken a rtak and bent severely a tak..... the handle designs on almost all the rats other than the rat3 are horrid.... the heat treat is inconsistant and .....well i just dont like them.... other than the rat 3.... however i wouldnt ever buy one again.....

Yea, ive heard things like this before on the RTAK. Maybe i got lucky on the RAT-7 but its been used for extensive prying, chopping, and some food prep and it has taken every task on with no problems. Also, i like the handle on the 7 it holds nice and is easy to choke back on for some heavier chopping.

plus I'm a knife collectin noob. but even as a noob i think the RAT-7 for $86 is one hell of a camp knife and all around beater.

sorry if i sound harsh...... just not a huge fan but for a true beater they are great.... i started out as a fan and as the blades failed or broke i became less of one...lol

not at all. i appreciate your opinions. we will see how it stands up to some beating next week. i wont take it easy on this one, it will be the only non busse of the lot.

if it breaks, it breaks. for the price i wont feel to bad. im guessing it wont take the abuse i can heap on a much larger infi blade, but ill treat it just like the badgers and gw's and just see what happens.

I've been thinking about one of those for a while. Thanks for posting the pic, especially alongside the GW. It looks like the handle size will be too small for me, since my fingers overhang a bit on the GW.

It's too bad, as I like D2 also.

again... i actually like the rat 3 its the only rat that hasnt bent or broke on me..... i am glad you got it rather than that rtak thing or the rat tak.....

i am sure the rat 3 will hold up.....

i was looking at those too, the rat 3 is cheaper, and i liked the looks better. the rtak (?) was a little bigger than i was interested in. just lucky i guess.

yes, it is a bit odd. maybe the handle contours make it feel smaller. in any event, if you have large hands, it will probably feel really small. it is also thinner, blade and handle, than the gw's.

I find that on my RAT-3 my index finger just naturally hits the choil. The edge infront of the choil is rounded. With that grip (I have big hands) the handle feels good. With the index finger behind the guard, the handle is too short. But I use mine a lot and the handle is never a problem. The knive is sharp (mine is the D2) and light and reasonably tough (no it is not a badger or howling rat), but it weight about 1/3 my HRLM, which has my favorite handle of all my knives.

They do seem to be an awesome blade for the money. Great blade shape and materials. I almost bought one.
Let me, well us know how it performs please.

Jus curious, why didn't you choose the plain edge version?

i prefer partial serrations. i know i am in the minority here, but for cutting string/cord, i find they work better. especially for push cuts, more edge and all.

I agree, although my rat3 is a plain edge, the more i see your D2 with part. serrated it makes me want one
