my new badger...

Nice one Mark, I've been looking at those and seen them at the Del Mar gun shows (crossroads of the west I think it's called). They feel nice in hand, just don't know anything about them. I remember the Topps people were at the last show I attended as well. It was long after my "discovering Busse". I recall me asking the woman attending the table how tough their knives were.....after her telling me about the materials and thinking "I can get a Ka-Bar with the same steels for $210 less." I figured it was best to hang on to my money :D. I've always liked D2 though. I'd be curious about what you'll have to say about it!

BTW, does anyone who's an INFI user (sorry Bravado :D) have anything to say about Ranger knives and the RD-9. Those look pretty neat to me. Price seems very reasonable....

Pbubsy - I'm a new INFI owner and haven't chopped anything w/ my CGFBM yet (so no, I'm not a user yet), but I've got 3 Ranger knives and really like them - especially for the price. I've done some chopping w/ my RD9 recurve side-by-side with my Dogfather, and it wasn't nearly as comfortable as the DF. The Ranger is no doubt sharper (thinner edge), and held an edge well against pine when I was chopping. It also did well clearing brush. I like the grip for slashing and utility work, but again, the ResC DF was much more comfortable when chopping.

The Ranger sheath isn't bad considering its a freebie (can't carry tip up because it will fall out). The black finish on my RD7 didn't stay on well at all, so my other Rangers are in Satin finish (+$20). Justin can do a number of different handle material and color options. I really like the RD9 for a kind of GP camp knife. Hopefully I'll get out w/ the CGFBM in a couple of weeks here and will have a better comparison for you!

Morimotom - I EDC my RAT3 (D2/combo) as well and use it for a variety of tasks - cutting cardboard to steak. I've yet to get myself an INFI EDC but I'm sure I will before too long here! If I'm not worried about sheeple, I usually EDC a Ranger RD4, and I just got a couple of Dumpster Mutts that will see some belt time too! I have the RAT5, 7 and RTAK II. I really like the RAT5.

paul,

im not sure i understand the high cost of the tops line. ive handled a few, and have a browning wsk that is essentially a tops knife. i had been looking at the trackers but couldnt see the cost justification. average steel, poor ergos, unusual grind. i love the browning, especially since it was a gift and i know it cost far less than the tracker.

the rat 3 is made by ontario, and is far cheaper than nearly any tops. i paid about 85.00 shipped.

A local guy here in Missoula MT is doing a damascus run for Topps of the T.B. Trackers (the smaller one) - those should be beautiful. Kind of off topic, but I thought I'd throw it out there!

that should look interesting. i dont have any experience with damascus, but have seen many patterns i like.

Thanks for the info Diceman  :D! I'll have to find one of the old style RD-9's. Those look great! I'm not a fan of Rec-C. Just doesn't fit my hands right. If it were thicker I might think differently. I don't mind hard handles and love micarta.

Mark, I think I know why Topps is so expensive:

They're tactical knives........totally worth the extra cost . :D They make some cool looking knives, but nothing that really jumps at me. The harpoon looks pretty useful though.

BTW: Damascus is usually a relatively soft steel being around 45-49 HRC (from what I've heard and seen at least). The damascus that has nickle in it (like Brad Vice high contrast damascus) is the softest because of it even though it looks VERY cool. More like shelf queens from what I've seen.

Stainless damascus and the Japanese type damascus and blue steels are great from what I hear. I especially like the Japanese blue steels. If you want, I have a small 6'' one you could try out if you want Mark. It's got a very thin edge and is even more useful because of it.

the world is full of bastards, the number increasing greatly the further one gets from missoula, montana!!!!

(one of my favorite movies, did i get the quote right?)

I haven't seen it - what movie is it from, I'll have to check it out!
