Honestly this terrifies me!! Forget getting lost, or bear attacks, what worries me most is getting bit by my becker. Most of my hiking is done in deep back country where help can be hours away, rolling an ankle could lead to a week long wait but at least I can last a week with pain, losing a lot of blood could be a death sentence. Worst of all I'm the first aid guru in my circle, I may invest in those puncture resistant gloves, anyone have experience with those?
So places I work, require us to use Kevlar gloves when we use tools. Safety manager thing. I find I lose too much dexterity when using a knife. I teach knife safety to people about 3 times a month, as a free class, and the most important thing anyone can do is engage the brain muscle first, knife muscle second.
Think to yourself, everytime, "What happens if this slips/cuts through/lets go?"
Most injuries with knives result in too much force and the arc of the cut AFTER the knife does the job. Like cutting rope, fold a rope over and pull the knife through the loop. You don't get cut when you are putting the knife in the loop, or when it cutting the rope, but AFTER the rope is cut, all that pent up force has to go somewhere, and the blade goes moving with release of resistance, and travels in a predetermined direction. If flesh is within the predetermined area, you get cut. Never point a blade edge or blade tip at flesh during any of your cuts, same as a loaded gun.
