Picked up a Black Raven ax at an antique store the other day for about $35. Unfortunately it has been used as a hammer sometime in its past, but other than that I was pretty happy with it. I'm not sure if the $35 is a great deal or not, but I was willing to pay it. If you guys have any thoughts or suggestions let me know! I am new to the forum so I can't post pictures yet, but will when I can.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

I'd pay $35 for a Black Raven in any shape, looking forward to pics!

I don't recall the rules for posting pics as a new member. You'll need sign up for a hosting site like photobucket or imgur. Upload a photo to the hosting site and then paste the appropriate link here.

Need a paid membership to ask values and stuff. Just search Ebay and other similar auction sites. They go for a pretty penny.

Ah,.... Sorry, didn't mean to violate rules. No way I would sell it, I have been looking for one for a long time. I was just curious how good of a deal I got...No Worries. Any suggestions on what kind of restore I should give it? I obviously have to get rid of the mushrooming so can't leave the current patina on it.

I'd leave it as is but that's me. Got a really good patina on it. If you absolutely HAD to get rid of the mushrooming you could do so then false a patina with vinegar. you'll get a fairly dark section where the edge is tempered so you'll need to sand it to an even finish. As I said, if it were me I'd leave it alone.

That works! That is a heluva deal.

In searching on Ebay, it seems like the lettering on the label and the bird is much less worn on my find than many that have sold...I have a few Keen Kutters and some Boy Scouts of America hatchets. Always the same dilemma...how to clean up the images without ruining them. Any thoughts???

No! No! No! No! No!

Leave that one precisely as it is. The market on those has gone crazy and you got a good one.

Honestly - I'd cash in right now while the market for those is nuts. You got a few bills headed your way. Count your blessings.

Speaking of these, went to an antique store and saw one of these someone actually ground OFF the Black Raven with a belt sander, the stamp was barely visible but the grind marks...

So you wouldn't touch the mushrooming? I hate that, and feel like it takes away so much from the attractiveness of the ax.
