In the handle. LOL
Hi all, yesterday I finished this knife for me. it has a 5.5" blade and a 4.75" handle with a blue spy capsule in the handle. that I carry a firesteel and cotton and pj mix in it.
A few weeks back Storl ( the owner of going gear.com)from here on the forums. contacted me about making up his knife called the Sparky knife for him. I said sure I will give it a try. Well after some e-mails and phone conversations a proto type was made up and sent to him. Well in that time I was making up a knife for a customer that wanted a CUB knife with 5.5" blade Well I like the feel and look and the way it handled. That was going to be my next personal blade length for me I said to myself. While making up a proto type for Storl, I was thinking what if I could put a spy capsule in a handle. Well I got to tinkering around and came up with this.

Well I am a bottonior some are Horace kephart was also,(He writes about it on pg 113 in the chapter light camp equipment and on pg 208 in the chapter axemanship the pic shows a man battoning or as Horace says RIVE with a froe We call them bigger knives now adays. ) some are not what ever trips your trigger. In this pic I was spliting up a some oak for my lunch fire that I was going to have in a little while. In the pic is the couple of fuzz sticks I carved up out of hackberry. I did not take a pic of the walnut that I split up this way to. I was using hard wood for a purpose. I was going to make fire for lunch just as Horace says to do Horace calls it his Luncheon fire.
pg 226 in the chapter the campfire. It is just about as perfect as you can get for a lunch fire for roasting my beef johnsonvill brats LOL
well Horace says to use hard would for best results so I used oak and walnut for my fire. A few days back Kathy and Kelly Girl and I went for a walk. well on the way back to home I found some dried plant stocks that we call marestail ( Don't we Rocket bomb he calls them that too) I grabbed about 10 of them and took them home and put them near the family fire pit area.

101_1126.jpg

Then I took the 10 dried plant stalks and broke them up and then took 4 peaces and layed them across the to split peaces of oak. In this pic this is not yesterdays fire but from another I had just showing what i do.

then I put the fuzz sticks on the 4 stalks and then the rest of the stocks and then a bunch of the hard wood splits that I Rived LOL with my knife.

then I took the cap off the spy capsule. I reached in pulled out my firesteel and with a dried plant stalk I reached into the capsule and with a twisty type motion pulled out some cotton/pj mix. I then wrapped some of the cotton/pj mix on the end of the dried plant stalk and now I have a nice long unlit match.
I then strike my rod and light the cotton and then procceded to light my fire.
Since there is room under the 4 plant stalks and the fuzz sticks which are on top of the 4 stalks then the rest of my wood on top of that it really makes it easy to start the fire with my nice long match. I can go from one side to the next side with no burnt fingers like with a smaller match. and stuff like that.
I used to take my cotton and then pull it a part and strike my rod and light it that way then put my fuzz stick and then the rest of the fire sood stuff or I would set my cotton next to the fuzz sticks and stuff but I would then bump my set up and that was just a pain. so I though I would just make a match and that is what I do now.

Well what do you think? comment welcome LOL If it looks like it would work for you to great, if it looks to crazy for you that is ok too. we are all different. if you have some ideas to make it better or look better LOL let me know I will sure take that into consideration. I all ready have some thoughts for the next one but if any of you have some please let me know.

Ok some of you may already say well that is an ok thing but what if you were to loose your knife then you loose your fire steel That is true.
But if you look in the pics I have a sheath that carries another fixed blade knife and a sharpener and a matchsafe with another firesteel rod and some other survival goodies.
Another thought I had was if I fell through some ice on a river or pond. Hope fuly being able to get out would I still have enough finger movemnt or dexterity to unsrew the cap even with the little keychain ring or would the water freeze around the cap so I could not unsrew it. sure it is a possiblity.
I will find out this weekend we are going to have a cold spell come thourgh and I will take my knife out and put it in water and try int out. I will break the ice on the cattle tank and and then put my hands and knife in the water for a while and will see what happens. LOL
Kelly girl is telling me it is time for her morning walk to I will check in later to see what some you all think of this.

Thanks for looking

Bryan

I like it. i was always a fan of the hollow handle "survival knives" and this is a more practical way to follow that idea, while keeping the overall strength of the knife intact.

Very cool concept! Is the capsule removable, or is it epoxied in there?

That is very cool and inovative Bryan. I dig it alot!!!!

Nice work, and thanks for sharing brother!!!

i'm also curious about how the spy capsule is trapped in there.

my first thought was that it was removable, with maybe an O-ring to keep it stuck in there pretty well.

but then it occured to me that you could just seal it in there and open the cap!

looks like a really cool concept. looks like it is pretty effective too.

i wouldn't buy one, but i am more of a component guy-i like all my tools seperate. it looks really well put together though.

Cool design. I've seen this sort of deal done by somebody else on the forums, can't remember who though. I probably wouldn't buy something like this, but that's just me.

That mare's tail does make some good kindling.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the positive feed back on this knife I made up. Ok now to some ?s RR and tknife yea I think the tang is still pretty strong. Tknife I have allways like the thought of being able to carry more survival goodies in the handle.

Caine thanks I like my hatchet too. For me it is perfect. I carry it with me every day now. I just slide it between my belt and pants in the morning and then for get it is there unless I think about it.

I did use 2 ton epoxy and glued the spy capsule in there.

Siguy yea I like to have more more ways to have extra survival goodies with me in other pockets and pack stuff like that to but this handle thingy just another way to do that.

Pitdog Sorry LOL Give Maisy a petting for me.

fishiker Oh boy I did not even think of a name yet. How about Breeden Survival Knife LOL I really do not know just yet I will have to think about.
Price wise I figure that all the parts. Steel, handles, pins, knife grinder belts, pins, glue, propane, spy capsule and firesteel rod, eletricty just plain all of it. $50 to $60 I am thinking. Then It took me about 8 or so hours to make up. I charge $12 an hour to make up a knife. Also I did not have to make a sheath for this knife that is a hour or so. The next one will be faster since I know what I to do now. maybe it will be 7.25 hours :D So do the math and that will give you and idea roughly. I need to do a few more and then I will have a better thought on it. anyways I hope that answers your ?s If not let me know. thanks again.

The rest of you guys thanks again :D:D:D

Bryan

Hi Rocketbomb yea that marestail is pretty cool. I went for a walk with kelly girl today and picked some more and brought it home. yea there are some other designs out there to.

Bryan

Looks sweet, dude.

Now, you have all of us (Or me anyway) wanting one. It is a "hollow handle" survival knife of sorts, except actually functional.

:thumbup:Thats a good looking knife & a good idea if your into those hollow handle type knives  Glad to see most of the tang is still intact. I'm not much on the Hollow handle knives my self but for those that are I think they will be pleased ;) Good job 'Ol Bud

Cool design, I really like it! Did you radius the tang at the fork?

And completely off topic - In the picture on the rock, is that local bedrock? It looks to be either true quartzite or sandstone cemented by silica.
