My new Buck Hartsook arrived yesterday....

I havn't done any extensive work with the little blade yet, but have practiced different methods of holding it, for the different chores that I'm likely to do and with a little user experience, I have no doubt that it can be a fairly safe and very usable companion.

I agree. I'll clarify that I meant my commentary about the grip to disabuse anybody of the rather odd notion that this is some kind of "tactical/combat" knife. It's not--unless maybe one's tactics involve a need to completely conceal a knife that's too small to get a really battle-ready grip on. (Like, maybe, next time your village gets raided for sacrificial victims and you're tied up with vines and being marched a great distance to a Mayan temple for an un-anesthetized cardiectomy, and you need something unobtrusive to cut the vines with?)

Rock6: You mention "credit-card floss dispenser"--where are these to be had? (Myself, I've taken to carrying a few yards of braided 80-lb-test fishing line wrapped around a card in my wallet--but am interested in other extremely-compact means of carrying survival gear. Among my best ideas to date: pocket magnifying card from Campmor, for fire-starting during high-sun daylight hours; am toying with the idea of surrounding a strip of char-cloth with some kind of tape or other water-resistant flat material for use with the card magnifier or otherwise.)

I still need to pick up a good wallet fresnel lense; one of the Dental facilities (Army base) had them and I picked up a few (wish I would have picked up more:mad: ). I did find the company that does the custom graphics for them...55 yards worth of dental floss; the only issue is that you have to buy a minimum of 144:eek: How about a putting together a "Bladeforums Preparedness Floss" order:D

I just got one and thought the sheath was a little weak also
I'm gonna wrap some black "exercise" tape around the sheath to get that black matte look I love so much

I kinda want to get a dartboard and practice throwing this little knife
Just In Case ya know!!!........

Throw knife............. aim off a bit..........misses target............ target picks up knife...............doesn't throw it back.............instead walks it to me............places in my forehead................

Get a gun instead! :D

Hahahahhaha
I live in California!!!
I can only pretty much look at my gatts in the comfort of my own home
I had to take a bunch of my "sporting arms" to my Colorado house because of some lame laws they passed here
(Maybe I'll make a How Much Trent Loves Diane Feinstein post in the political forum someday...)

I'll make sure I post a video of my Hartshook vs. dartboard adventures!!!
That skill might come in handy if I am ever attacked by a drunken dwarf

The blade does seem prety damn sharp from the factory I must admit
It is a little smaller than what I was expecting but it's still cool
Looks good hanging next to my other necknives anyways

I am actually thinking of wrapping the handle with Type I black paracord if I can ever find any..........:grumpy:

Hey Guys..

Longbow....

I need you to measure the holes on the side of your hat from center to center...

I've gotta build a bunch of Hartsook sheaths next week and I'll custom tailor your to line up with the holes on your Tilly.

I think you'll really like it as a hat knife...

I bought some small (2 inch) black wire ties. Leave the knive in the sheath, and tie on of the wire ties in the middle. It is small and works great, solved the problem for very little cost.

Yeah, I wrapped green duct tape around the sheat and it works good enough and it gives me a bit of tape for other uses.

Normark, the measurement center to center is so close to, that I'll call it 2 3/4".

 thanks

If you put the sheath under hot water, you can make it tighter. I just threw it in a Pyrex bowl and poured hot water over it. Go easy-- you can overdo it. I held it under cold water to give it a "set."

Or just get a nice one from Normark.

It would be cool to have a neck sheath with firesteel, compass, LED light, whistle, and knife all nicely mounted. Heck, let's put a mirror on the back while we're at it.

How about adding a flint/magnesium stick thingy?

Been playing with the Hartsook, using the sheath it comes with as a handle. It snaps in and can be made somewhat secure by the grip used. I did some whittling to sharpen a couple of hardwood sticks and pealed an apple with it, without any lost fingers, so it works well enough. Though care should be exercised at all times.

A very easy quick fix.

I lengthened the little lanyard that it came with.
I have my lanyard knotted so I can slip my pinky in the end of the lanyard.
I grip the knife with my thumb and first finger in the choil.
I tension the back of the knife by pulling a little with my pinky.

This means the back of the knife is not floating, and I have much much more control on the use of the knife.
It is almost as if I have lengthend the handle by another two fingers.

For 20 cents worth of paracord, try it out!

I have a Tilley and you got me thinking. Are you securing it on the inside of the hat where the "shoelaces" come out? Any chance of a pic? What else are you putting into your Tilley PSK? This sounds like a great idea you have come up with.

Hey Pete, when I first read the idea, it made sense to me. As far as outside or in, wearing the fixed blade on the outside, anywhere but on a belt, is verboten in California, so I was thinking inside. I would be adding a BSA Hotspark, a tinder-quik from my spark-lite firestarter, maybe a paracord hatband, but I am lousy at that kind of stuff and if I can get away with it, an Inova mini-lite and a piece of reflective material like mylar in the pocket, with a couple of bandaids. I don't want it to look like it has a kit hanging off of it, so the list could be even shorter by the time I get it all together.

Very cool idea. I am going to start playing around with the inside of my Tilley. I always carry id, cash, and a key in a waterproof id ziploc, but I could add the other stuff very easily. I bought the hartsook on a whim, was mildly surprised at how small/thin it was but the hat idea sounds perfect for it. Thanks.

Pete
