I have to admit it here in the forums . . . whilst I have long been an admirer of Spyderco and have handled examples of their work at every opportunity, I have, until now, never owned a Spyderco. They are very expensive here in South Africa once import duties and VAT's and dealer markups have been added. I can actually get a custom made pocket folder for less than many Spyderco models ($85 - $100). The forums have however converted me, as has the level of business conduct I have seen coming from Sal and Danelle and the rest of Spyderco.
Ordering from here was quite a hassle with first having to find a dealer with a Calypso Jr. in stock, then having a competitive price, and then taking Mastercard (not as simple as it might sound).
- DiscountKnives couldn't post in time,
- AZKnife was about $30 more than average,
- Danelle suggested Ironstone, but they never
replied to my e-Mails,
- Knifecenter came through, and although they
posted the knife surface mail (instead of the
requested priority) it arrived in time to be collected
and brought back to SA by a friend.
I chose the Calypso Jr. (micarta), for a number of reasons . . .
1. It has an appealing design, size and proportion,
2. It might soon be out of production (!),
3. It is a flat grind (wanted a flat grind!), and
4. It has a pocket clip (my first believe it or not).
The Calypso Jr. travelled a long way from Golden CO, but an hour or so ago it finally landed in my hot little hands, and I have to say I am very happy. Congratulations must go to Spyderco for producing such a fine piece, it would be sad to see it slide off the inventory list. During the next couple of days it will receive much attention from me, and my "inner circle" of knifing buddies and I will report my findings back to the forum. Ultimately it is going to the wife, but I'll never be very far away!
Regards, HILTON
