I bought a cyclone a couple of weeks ago. I flipped it open today and there are rust spots on the blade! I put some Breakfree CLP on it about 2 days after I bought it. What's the deal? Did the CLP mess up the finish or something? HELP!

what did you do to get the rust off? Man, I can't believe it. It's never been wet. I've used it to open a box or three but nothing else

Bead blast finishes have alot of nooks and crannies for stuff to get into. It's great on an english muffin but pretty crappy on your blade. Go to the local hardware store or a knife store like NGK and get a tube of Flitz. It is great stuff and you can even use it on your silverware, plastics and just about anyting else that needs a shine. It will take the spot rust off in just a couple of minutes and leave a protective film. It is likely that you won't have the problem again.

Bag on Kershaw blades if you want but the reason I bought the Flitz in the first place was a Spyderco. All brands will get funky on you from time to time, the important thing is to know how to care for your blades and keep em looking good. Have a nice night fellas.

I clean all my knives and blades with Militec-1... wipe them dry and then coat and buff the blades with renaissance wax.

I do it while watching Tv... guns too, drives my wife crazy.

Flitz will take care of those spots. As spiral said, they're just surface spots. Personally, I wipe down all my EDC blades once a week with Hoppes gun oil, and it eliminates these problems. The knives that aren't carried on a regular basis get a cleaning once a month. A little maintenance on a scheduled basis is a good thing...

That's classic Spiral!

I wipe down the blade of the EDC of The Day with alcohol to keep it clean; never know when you'll use it on food. I guess I clean it so often that rust is never an issue. Even if my Wife uses it on something like cutting an orange, the residue doesn't stay on the blade for long.

I must be really luck (fingers crossed) I have never had any blades show signs of rust and I live in Florida. I even have several non-stainless blades (damascus Leek and a few customs) and those have never rusted either.

you could also just wait for the Ti, Stellite Leek...
(1660TISTEL ?). Just keep watching the delivery date sticky for updates on that one.:D

wagdog: Try not to be too disappointed...

I've always read warnings about high-carbon stainless steels rusting and seen it on some of my kitchen knives, but not so far on any of my Kershaws. It's probably not related to CLP use...perhaps you've been working extra hard lately and the inside of your pocket got damp (and even corrosive) from sweat?

Anyway, some of the other suggestions should help you get the spots off...there are also eraser-type products (you use them like a pencil eraser) designed to remove spots from blades, but I have no personal experience with them.

I think I'm going to start wiping down my blades with some type of protectant.

Does anyone know if the Tuf Cloth and/or Tuf Glide products are any good for this?

Thanks everyone. I'm going to go get some flitz or maas today and get the rust spots off. Since I live in Utah, the humidity is next to nothing. However, I'm a fat guy and my pockets turn into East Texas humidity/rain-forest on a daily basis. I hadn't thought of that at all. Just out of curiosity, will a good metal polish take the logo off the blade as well?

With all this talk of blade care what do the Kershaw people recomend. Whats the best way to care for kershaw knives?

Every night before bed, I remove the blade from my Blur, put a light coating of "break free" on the blade and wrap it in a soft hand towel. It takes about 15 minutes in the evening and 15 in the morning, but it gives me some peace of mind.

Flitz no but some of the really harsh and/or really abrasive stuff might.

Reholli, Tuf Glide is pretty good stuff. I use it more as a lube that a protectant but it does both jobs well. A Tough Cloth is really good for quick touch ups and removing finger prints during marathon knife fondling sessions. If you get a tough cloth make sure you go ahead and get a small bottle of tough glide too. Eventually the cloth will dry out and you can bring it back to life with a half a dozen drops of Tuf Glide.

Enjoy:thumbup:

OK OE...I see you down there...is this a joke or not?

Nighttime routine: ...let dogs out, fix glass of tea, let dogs in, brush teeth, remove Blur blade, turn off lights, say prayers...

I hear that sometimes he likes to hang upside down and dissassemble his Blur and put it back together real fast before he passes out. OE is always in a constant state of readiness and his skills have to be sharpened to a razor edge. :D

Individual "chemistry" can certainly do this. When I was young, even light perspiration from my hands would remove the blue from a gun in pretty short order. Luckily that changed when I got into my later 20's ... but I've known other guys whose pockets were hell on metal, brass keys turning green, even chromed steel getting deeply rusted and pitted.

Just keep 'em clean, wiping with something like Break-Free CLP or Hoppes #9 should neutralize anything evil, and keep a light coat of oil or protectant on them.
