So I had an interview and job offer yesterday and I have to share the results.

I accepted a position as a crew leader for next season (summer 2011) with the Montana Conservation Corps on an immersion trail crew. What this means is that I start training in February then in May we get our crew and head out into the backcountry to do trail building and maintenance. The kicker is that we will be gone all summer long, not once coming out of the backcountry until the middle to end of October. We will be carrying everything we need for the 6 months on our backs; tools, clothes, tents, gear, everything except food, we get resupplied with food every 10 days or so.

The beautiful part of this is I will be working in the Bitterroot Valley on the Selway River in the Nez Perce National Forest, outside of Missoula Montana, think "A River Runs Through It". I am so excited 6 Months in the backcountry I cannot wait. But now comes the hard part choosing what gear I will take.

Well I just had to share, have a great day.

You lucky bastard... you have my dream job. Be thankful, not many people get oppurtunities like this. Did you go to school for it? I wish I could get that kind of job, but even if it landed in my lap right now, I have kids and a wife to take care of... so that is a no can do.

I too am jealous. Please give them my resume (how do I attach it to this post?)

Congrats!

A dream job for sure. I'm happy for you and jealous at the same time:D.

Wow I am truly jealous. I would really like to have that job. Mind me asking how you got it?

Congratulations on finding your dream job!

Ever since my first trek to Philmont in 2006, it has been my dream to be a ranger out there. My first experience was in the north country and in the Valle Vidal in the Carson National Forest. It was incredible and I can only imagine that where you'll be going in the back country won't be any less awesome. Congratulations - I am envious!

God bless, enjoy yourself, and be safe.

KATN,

Wade

Sweet! You must not have a wife and kids. That sounds like my dream job also. I guess I'm living the dream as "Daddy". :) Good luck, enjoy it while you can.

Oh my gosh.... I'd give up school and everything else to do that for several months. To be forced to survive with what I carry... hope you have an absolute blast dude

Thanks for the kind words everybody, I will keep you all up to date as to what is happening with it.

Joe you are correct http://www.mtcorps.org/join is where to apply for positions like this.

And no Hoopster I do not have a wife or kids so I am free to roam the country at my own will, but I am very happy for you.

Right on with the awesome job
Curious: What knives do you tend to bring with you for the lengthy bush stays?

I haven't decided yet. Right now I am looking at my:

LM Wave cause I am gonna have to be able to fix things out there
ESEE-3, its my favorite blade right now and there will be lots of axes and saws to do the heavy lifting
ESEE Lite Machete for brush work and things like that.

Those are my thoughts right now but I don't know for sure yet, I still have lots of time to see what works best

Those seem like great choices ,esp. the multi-tool and machete. Hope it all works out for you. I'd love a job like that if I wasn't tied down with family and stuff. I'm sure you'll have some good stories to tell when you get back :)

I'd say the first thing to do is get your butt in shape!!! (at least that's what I'd need to do)

I am SO jealous. That's my dream job as well. I couldn't do it, though. I'd never be able to leave my girlfriend for so long. Oh, if only I was single again...

Tree planting is another tempting work opportunity. That, I might do. Wont be out for quite so long doing tree planting.

God, I love the woods.

Congrats on yours and my dream job bro! In terms of blades I think a HEST, Junglas, and Multi-tool would be a great combo to carry. It's been a while since I've been in the back country up there but I think a Junglas might almost be better than the Lite Machete. Plus the kydex sheath that comes with the Junglas is top notch making it easy to attach to your pack. The HEST has an added thickness that the 3 doesn't have and out in the bush something as bombproof as the HEST is a God-sent.

wow and here I was thinking heading off to gunsmithing school was going to be my dream job... this sounds amazing good luck with it!
