My new (dream) job

I am in pretty good shape right now but no where near where I should be for something like this.

you should try for the tree plantings NothingCoherent follow your dreams. I know it sounds corny but life is so much more fun when you do.

333 my concern with the HEST is the added thickness, it would be nice but it will be used a lot as a food prep knife, cutting cheese salami and scooping peanut butter so I am not sure if I want to take my HEST for that reason but the extra thickness and bombproofness of it would be nice. As far as the Junglas I am thinking I want something thinner and a bit longer for using as a draw knife and taking off small limbs, but I haven't used the Junglas yet so I don't know. I am looking for thoughts and other's ideas as well.

Hey Wanderlust,

I just finished working this season with the forest circus in the Selway Bitterroot. I was the crew leader for the Lochsa and Powell Ranger District Crew. Sounds like you'll be working on the Moose Creek District. My districts border Moose Creek to the north and sometimes we cross over.

It's some beautiful country out there, but if you aren't in superlative physical condition I can promise you, you will get your ass WORKED into the GROUND.
:D

There is maybe a 50-50 chance that I'll be working with you next summer in some capacity as the 3 districts are combining. Small world eh?

Anyhow, If you are interested, I have done a little blogging about this summer in the Selway Bitterroot http://patriotearth.blogspot.com/ If you scroll down a bit you'll start seeing some pics and stories right off.

My email address is also in the sidebar if you wanted to ask any questions from a veteran crew leader. I don't get to BladeForums often enough to check here.

Cheers and Congrats!

Congratulations! That sounds like really neat job! I assume the pay is minimal, but the rewards of the experience sound rich.

Don't forget to take something to keep your edges sharp, a small ceramic stone or something. If weight allows, a compact camera with a large memory card would be cool, assuming you would actually have the time to take pictures, and spare batteries - I assume a solar charger would be too big/bulky plus if you are in the forest, might not get much sun?

Enjoy it!

I would think all you would NEED as far as knives go would be the ESEE-3 and a good multitool (Leatherman or Victoinox). As far as bigger choppers I would bet that all of those needs would be met by your employer. Plus then if you break it or more likely loose it inadvertently leaving it behind on a job site its not your money that you're out. Save the pack weight for other "luxery" items since you will be out for such an extended period of time. I agree with you on the HEST. I love mine and carry whenever I'm out doing EMS/Rescue but for a daily use knife the RC-3 excells at everyday tasks with the advantage of being engineered to handle tough stuff if it arises. I appreciate the thickness of the HEST when I'm knee deep in S%#t but when I'm just reaching for a knife to make a snack, cut some line, open a package, etc the streamlined RC-3 is the way to go.
