Well this is what ive been working at over the weekend. Was a little hard with just a cordless drill but i managed.
It was originally a free black spy capsule from edcdepot.com but the coating started to wear off so I just chucked it up in the drill and just sanded the coating off...
I got a little to excited with the sanding and removed some of the knurling by accident so I sanded the rest off and polished it a little with a scotchbrite pad. I then clamped it to the table and drilled the hole through.
Filled the bottom with a little epoxy and put some blutak on the blank ferro rod at the point i wanted it to go up to and then stood it upright on some more blutak and left it overnight.

Hope you like it!

Cool :)
Im interested to know how it holds up after being knocked around and used a bit

Like it? Oh yeah - that's a great job!

Really neat and a great idea. Nice micarta handles matching the knife are nice, but this is much more practical.

Now I need to get some spy capsules...

I was thinking of doing something similar. For now, I just zip-tied the capsule to the hole on the firesteel's handle.

That is very cool. Nice big steel and some tinder in one nice looking package.

What size firesteel did you use? What are the dimensions of the entire thing? Do you have any pics that show scale? Sorry for the 20 questions.

Looks great, nice and clean. I'm gonna have to try and make some of those.

Great idea. I tend to carry an Oddities Spy Capsule of Vaseline/Cotton on a split ring attached to my firesteel & striker, but your solution is much neater. Good job.

You better patent that idea quick! :D

That really is a neat idea...a good grip for the ferro-rod and a waterproof capsul for a couple of cotton-ball/Vaseline tinder balls. Let us know how it holds up...I have a few of those capsules and may give it a shot myself.

THanks for the complimetns guys. More pics and dims. will come later, Ive got to get to school.
But this is actually the second attempt my first one worked but it was so terrible looking I didnt put pics up. The ferro rod was crooked, epoxy was leaking out, etc.

just to answer stingray's questions-

Im not sure of the ferro rods exact dimensions but its a about 2.5inches long and about 1/4inch wide.
The spy capsule is the standard one and is free from edcdepot.com.
Overall its about 4inches long including the little lanyard part.

I strongly encourage you guys to try it all i used was a strip of 120grit sandpaper and scotchbrite pad (optional- only if you want the metal finish) a clamp and a cordless drill and a dap of epoxy.

That is very cool. Very functional. Good way to have it all with you. That would look nice on a knife sheath as well.

Someone on here mentioned one time about milling out a handle and using a set screw to hold the firesteel. That might be a good idea since it would make it replaceable. I think it was a thought, not something someone had actually done.

can you buy those capsules from EDC depot? All I could find were the extra large ones which are 3" long. I would like to just buy maybe 10 or so of the free 1 7/8" ones.

Wish i could get them in Aus... got them from bensbackwoods.com but this also let me tack on a Mora 2000 and a few other goodies to my order.
Or you could just go with Myal's option. When I get time (and money) to get more ferro rods and spy capsules I was thinking of putting them together and giving them away here in a few contests to say thanks for the great forum.

Nick-nack, where'd you get the Ferro rod blanks in Aus mate?
