You're probably going to have to make it fairly large for the small lettering to be legible. Ernie will give you his thoughts if you call him and can put the design in front of him to discuss at the time.

I like the irony of the name but it does seem like there is a lot going on for a logo. What size are you thinking? 1/2 " or smaller and you will lose a lot of detail. 3/4 would be ok to read but might not fit properly on a blade. By the way, were you airborne?

3 PPCLI Parachute company , the designer does a lot of marketing type stuff . He was actually lecturing this last week and asked his students to help come up with something , he started by explaining and showing pictures of a lot of Loveless knives and it went from there. He's in D.C. and is a Adobe/ photoshop expert or something and he thought it was very important to include my name and where I live. The rest of the logo inspiration was from my military background , 12 years in the infantry and 3 tours . He asked me for some infantry and paratrooper type images badges , wings etc and went from there. If you guys don't think it'll work I'll let him know and we can try something different that's why I'm looking for opinions here.

I can't say it won't work. It is a little complex for a small mark, and I have never etched anything with super fine detail, so it's hard to make a judgement. Ernie might be able to give you the best answer, he has probably dealt with this issue more than most makers.

As has been mentioned, Ernie is a great guy and will work with you on your design.
Although the design looks really neat and conveys a lot of information, I would be afraid that the size required for that much detail to be legible would take away from the knife. IMO, the customer's experience is more about the knife and less about the maker.
My suggestion would be to remove the wings and parachute as well as the words "Fraser Dull, Alberta" from the lower ring. This would leave Canada in wording and of course, the maple leaf in the center. I think these changes would allow the overall size to be reduced to a more manageable size for a blade.
I would keep the original design for your webpage logo -- add the correct colors and you'd have an awesome opening page design.
I greatly respect your military service and experience so please don't take offense to my input.
Ultimately, it's about what YOU like.
Good luck
Wayne

I like the idea a lot, but to make it a bit less busy so that it will work on a small blade stencil, how about "Fraser Dull Knives, Canada" Gets all of your info in there except for the Alberta part and takes up a bit less space.

Great logo!!

Name I agree, it will be vital in searches.

Canada, sure, province? only if you are sure you won't move.

I like it, but it may be too complex for an etch.
The internal circle, parachute, lines in the wings are all pretty delicate.
I would eliminate them and bold up the text of your name and location.

Consider one logo for letterhead & website with a simpler one for the etch.

My thoughts are that it's very nicely done, and you should definitely have it made into some T-shirts and maybe hats... but just put your last name on your knives. Or first initial and last name.... first and last name at most. The logic used to be you should put your city/state on the blade as people could find you that way.... but they were using the phone book and pushing the school bus uphill both ways then. ;) Nowadays, people will find you in 10 seconds with Google. If they can't, you probably need to work harder at being a better knife maker more than needing a better logo ;) (not directed at you Fraser, just an open ended, silly comment).

There probably aren't too many knives out there marked "DULL" either ;) :D I also like the irony.

There are a handful of other Wheelers out there making knives, and so far it's been a very rare occurrence that somebody got me mixed up with any of them.

T-shirts... ;) :)

I am looking at the logo, and believe me its probably because I don't get it, but why would you want to advertise on a logo that the name of the knife is "dull"?

That would look gorgeous on a t-shirt. It is WAY too busy for a knife blade.

I agree with the Count, para logo without the chute, country below with the name above (although my wife said she would never buy a dull knife, but as I said, I appreciate the irony.) BTW I'm Navy but I spent 11 years in Gagetown, met a lot of PPCLI and RCR (of course).

look at my name , actually never mind.

I sent the image to Ernie so I'll see what he says then talk to my friend who made it and make some changes.

Ok , going to make the changes what size should I get I want a large and medium sized logo but don't know what the imperial ( American ) sizes are or what size knife makers generally use. It will be horizontal on the blade.

I would get Ernie's advice on the final size/sizes. I think the general preference is the smaller the better as long as the detail is clealy visible.

I asked him and he emailed me back asking what sizes I wanted on the sheet .
