My new logo, Updated logo pic pg2 Finished!

This could be great for a lot of things - signs, banners, t-shirts, caps, advertising brochures - but not on the knives, it's far too much. It was an obnoxious habit for a while that many custom makers would pretty much etch their entire business card on their blades - tacky, tacky, tacky! You don't want your mark taking attention away from your knives -- and this mark will have to be large to be clearly seen as is. I tried scaling it on my screen -- it quickly loses detail - even when the wings are still over 2" across on my screen, a lot of the detail is already marginal or mostly lost (and would definitely be lost and/or unreadable when etched) - about 2 1/2 inches across the wings is about the smallest effective size for this logo, to my eyes anyway.

Something like F. DULL, CANADA in a straight line over some simplified, stylized wings would probably work pretty well. Or F. DULL over CANADA, with some simplified wings on each side of the words.

You will probably have some issues etching that on you knife. I'd make it a bit simpler.

I'm going to make it a lot simpler with my ms paint skills :jerkit: tonight . Then I'll see what you guys think and what size is appropriate . Oh and Nick I have loads of respect for you as a blade smith/ knife maker but you can come across as very pleasant at times.

So my graphic designer adobe/photo shop professional did it up with 3d software to size . I gave him the link to this thread and he read all the comments and fixed it. Sorry for the earlier comment I'm gullible.

How big is that test etch? I REALLY like your logo, but i have to agree that sharp lines when it is smaller will be a problem... unless you are very careful to not get and bleeding, which is sometimes very hard to do!

I like the design and if you can get good etches in a size you are happy with I think it's a winner.

The thing to remember is that a lot of things can be made on a graphics program and a high quality printer. making the same thing with an etcher on a blade is a far different thing.

imo...the only way you will get close to those fine lines, would be to have a perfect mirror finish, and excellent timing during etching.

Many things are possible inside the Magic Box. Making them a reality is the part where you run into trouble.

EDIT: Since it is done in a program that you can add/get dimensions, what is the thinnest place on the etch? (Distance across the letters)

If the secondary bevel is .050" Then I'd imagine your letters are .030"-.040" high, putting your average width at around .003". If you are not familiar with what that really is, pluck a thin hair out of your head, that is .003".

This is the final version , Ernie is making it right now . My Graphic Designer friend emailed me and said he's followed the thread and to thank everyone in the thread for helping him make it .

I like it!

I think you don't really loose much in translation from the first to the final version. All of the major components are still there, it still looks cool, and the best is that it will turn out better etching it because it isn't too intricate.

I think the new one will work great, the only thing that stood out to me for some reason is the comma between Dull and Canada. Would a dash or a dot be better? Probably something in my past making me not like the comma...

Awesome dude! Ernie will treat you well, his stencils are top notch, and being in Canada like yourself it still got to me in about a week through regular mail!

I can hear the call now, "Hey, I just scored a Dull knife!" The proclamation has a peculiar ring to it. Not only that, but the knife has a really cool logo on it too! Good work Mr. Dull. I'd say you have a top notch graphic designer in your friend! Is he/she willing to help out any other knife makers, or in my case aspiring knife makers? All the best to you and your friend! --Phil
