My New Massad Ayoob Defensive Folder

I might have paid too much for this knife I'm not sure. A friend of mine said it a great knife for defense. I currently carry a civie in fact I live and die with my civie. I own quite a few them can't ever have too many you know. Anyway, I must say that this blade isn't worth all the hype its getting on this board or on the press in my opinion. Don't get me wrong its a high quality knife, but I wouldn't use it for my first line of defense for a folder. This knife needs work. Here the problems I have with the blade.

1) Shape of the knife not really meant for slashing aka harpy and civie etc.. There no doubt in my mind that it will cut you. Just like any decent folder will. It doesn't break any new ground here. I tested this knife against my civie, a cold steel tanto voyager. It didn't slash as well as a civie did. "I probably should have used a harpy instead of a civie during the test but oh well." It faired below the cold steel voyager.

Here how I conducted the test.

All the knives tested using the same medium.
All the knives using the same slash
All the knives were slash in the close to the same area. "each time a test was conducted I changed the medium to insure a fresh start.

I rotated the slashing order to insure that the slashing results did not reflect fatigue on my part. So essentially each knife was given 3 slashes in different order to insure a balance.

2. The handle can be very slippery.

3. Bad locking. Here how I tested the lock I took a pork thigh from the fridg. tied it to my practice dummy and took a few hard stabs at it. First shot was ok knife handled well, but second shots no problem 4 shout knife lock gave out

. Tip was started to bend " this was sad. The pork was not frozen, nor were there any bones and no the knife never went through the piece of meat! I think it was the thick pig skin on the outside that might have done it.

Anyway, I'm not sure why people consider this a great def knife compared to so many others out tere that i feel are far better.I must say that the handle design while slippery is very comfortable to hold. I think as a tool used for fishing etc.. it would be a great knife, but I wouldn't use it for anything that required any sort of strength
