Onterio RAT 3

I've really underrated plain 1095 steel with a good heat treatment

It's amazing

Curls for days with feather sticks.

Good sheath, steel, handle slabs, ergos, price.

Win.

It's for those "that's not a neck knife... THIS is a neck knife!" scenarios... ;)

Thanks, Google.

^^^ okay, THAT made me LOL.

The RAT 3 looks like a pretty awesome blade. I don't have any Ontario blades but I've heard good things about them. Looks like the factory edge on that 3 was really nice... unless you touched it up.

I've had an ESEE 3P-mil. Looks like a similar production belt-sanding pattern...

I suggest going to theknifeconnection.net and getting some of his custom contoured handles for Rat/ESEE knives. They rock.

Yep, great Randell design.

If you ever want an upgraded version, grab one of the Esee 3 models. Same exact knife and designer but, with much better fit and finish as well as a superior heat treat for even better edge retention and general blade toughness.

Dulled the knife on some cardboard.

Uneven factory grind.

Fixed the bevel on a stone
cuts paper. Pops hair.
I've really underestimated 1095 carbon steel with a good heat treatment.

Screws are not flush. Don't care, still cuts.

Like I said get an Esee 3 when your ready to upgrade. Ontario's fit, finish and heat treatment is mediocre at best. That's why Jeff Randell parted ways with Ontario and went with Rowen. The Rowen forged Esee line is far better in every way. When you compare the two side by side, the Ontario looks Iike it's made in a cheap Chinese factory, full of flaws. When you compare them in the real world the Ontario's blades snap in half, fail, and dull much easier where the Esee's are near indestructible. There are videos of torture testing of the two. I myself avoid Ontario in general due to there poor manufacturing. Both Esee and Tops are better yet similar options imo.
