My new Ontario rat 1

Bought on Amazon but the seller was Ontario knife company direct. And it was Taiwan made. I liked it but the defective lock was a no go. I love Ontarios fixed blades I have an sp2 and just got a 499 but if I buy another Ontario folder it will probably be the automatic. Only thing about the 499 is it’s dull as a butter knife and the rivets in the sheath behind the sharpening stone pocket scratch the blade really badly.
They don't have good reviews. Plus, looks like Amazon handles the customer service. Buying kives from an actual knife dealer is always the safest bet. Hard to blame the product when the dealer is suspect.

Rats were historically made in Taiwan and had a good reputation. It appears OKC has recently moved production to China. Quality has likely suffered.
if thats really the case I'm really concerned, quality will be much lower

The implication here is that they have moved all their production to China. Is this true? Or just the one RAT 1 KC exclusive? Are there more RATs being made in China? A quick look at the usual dealers shows Taiwan still.

even tho I'm a regular here, I still can't read most threads... there are just so many

The D2 Rat is Taiwan, the AUS blade is CCP.

Their website still lists the Rat 1 as Taiwan, but who knows how often that gets updated.

One more time.

RAT 1 or 2 with D2 steel blade= Made in Taiwan.
RAT 1 or 2 with AUS-8 steel blade = Made in Mainland/in Peoples Republic of China.

Thanks for the info. There are have been several different contradictory sources of information here. Do you mind sharing with us where you got this information?

My understanding is that all were once made in Taiwan.
More recently, I don't know the date, the AUS 8's from at least one of the large dealers are being made on the mainland. Could be just that one and it could be that some of the Taiwan models are older stock. I'll leave that to others that have the AUS8's to chime in. I don't have any myself with that blade.
That's what I've read on dealer sites, if you look closely on the spec's and it's also what I've found from the several I've purchased myself. I've never seen anyone claiming a legit D-2 version that came from the mainland.

You are correct. Only the exclusive with Micarta was manufactured in China. The normal models of R1 and R2 in both steels are Taiwan.

Here's a little tip on Amazon. Even though it's sold by okc direct..its SHIPPED by Amazon.
Amazon is notorious for just mixing products if they are the same type in their warehouses.
There's no telling who provided that knife to Amazon originally.
This has been a pain point for sellers who send legit items..but because they are mixed with everyone else's..a customer recieves a fake and gives a negative to the seller.
There are ways around this for companies, to pay extra for thier own space, but even them it's not foolproof.
Amazon just isn't the place to buy knives in my opinion.

I guess I've just been lucky. I have used Amazon to buy plenty of knives. Spyderco, ZT and even Benchmade. I made sure to check the sellers out before hand but all have been genuine products as they have all gone back for sharpening and never had an issue. Spyderco even has a preferred dealer/seller listed on there. To each his own I guess.
