Hi all, I have been working on a little project. I have a small Buck hatchet that had a handle on it from the company Buck and I decided to put my own handle on and of course it is Orange G-10 with white liners to:D. I really like this little hatchet. For the alround smaller chopper it cuts likes crazy and stays sharp just a nice light weight hatchet. This is not for cutting down big timber it is great for making a shelter and getting fire wood for a three season type thing not for up north. I would rather have a bigger axe for that but for the smaller stuff this little hatchet works great for me. Just today Kathy and I took on another tree cutting job and while we were looking the area that needs to be cut for the landowner. We were walking the tree line and I took out my Peace maker and did some smaller branches 1" thick or less but for the branches that were 2" and a little biggr that little hatchet came out and went to work. now I was not cutting for hours at a time I probably cut 40 or so bigger branches while we walked and looked over the area. For your info a Fence is going to go up. But not all the trees are comming down. So to blaze a trail that Kathy and I will make atrail and clear it ( with chainsaws )up for the fence that will be put up. As we were getting ready to first go and look at the area the land owner asked kathy and I if we were ready to go into the timber I said yes we are we have are little shoulder packs. When I brought mine out and shoulder it he said wow you really are prepared I just a brought a bottle of water. I said yea we come a little prepared and left it at that. Actions speak louder than words normally. We were hiking in a rough area it is a canyon complex. real easy to turn an ankle trip, fall and just plain out get in trouble you could scream for all you are worth and no one is going to hear you. Well we came to some areas that were over groan pretty good, and out came my knife for some stuff but when it came to the little bigger stuff out came the Buck hatchet. I could tell when I started going first and clearing some branches out of the way for us to walk a little easyer, the land onwer was impressed. Being prepared when others are really not makes them think some. Well on to the pics this little hatchet has a handle NOW that fits me Perfect. In this pic this is the handle that was on it.

On the Water bottle pouch I have a sheath that I sewed on there. This pouch is a Doug Ritter mk3 knife sheath that I put one of my 5" Pathfinders in and took the mk3 knife and put in with some of my other knives that sit and do nothing. LOL
Well all what do you think about the Orange handle scales and the white liners that I put on this little hatchet?

i have that same little hatchet... my dad bought it for me when i was 12, i think...:)

I'm a big fan of the orange G-10 handles as well.

How do you like that little hatchet? I had one years ago that sort of just disappeared. Been considering one again due to the lightweight.

Thanks every one for the comments on the orange handle that I put on this little Buck hatchet. The ease of and the way it carries on my shoulder pack just makes it so fun to have along when hiking. I have read that the older generation they seemed to all carry one, Nessmuk, Kephart, E Krepts and Krepts like his knife to be a little thicker 5/32" thick and with a straight back blade of a 4.5" lenght. So much for they all liked thin LOL, Dan Beard ,
and so many others.
The cutting and chopping of of this little hatchet just really works for me and what I do. I go slow and make every chop count. It bits way deeper than my 6" Bladed peacemaker into wood.
And it really showed it's worth yesterday while helping to blaze a trail for the land owner that Kathy and I were with while looking over his place for cutting trees for him so he can put up a fence.
I really like orange handle it is a lot more rounded than the one that came with it and feels better to me too. LOL of course it is a lot easyer to see when set down too.

Thanks again for the comments on this little project that I did.

That's really cool how it all goes together like that.

I need to get me some skillz. I can't afford to keep buying everything that looks cool to me.

Anyone know where I can get that hatchet? Looks really neat. Nice orange scales too.

You are the first person that I have seen here mention E. Kreps. His writings are as usefull as Nessmuk`s, but you never hear of him,

BTW - That hatchet looks awesome!

Hi John you are right not to much is mentioned on him. E krepts had his thoughts on what worked for him and might work for others to. His thoughts on what a sheath knife should be are not the thin is in line that some say.
5/32" is just a nice thickness ,that is what my personal every day carry is but instead of a 4.5" blade like he liked mine sports a 6" blade length. I use that same thinkness at least for helping to prepare two meals a day and find that it works just fine. But to each is own.
A gain thanks for all the comments on my new handle on that little Buck hatchet that I put on it.
3wolves asked about where to get them at. I do not know if they still make them or not but just for fun when I had the old handle ground off I traced the naked hatchet out on a peace of 1/4" 0-1 and but I made the hatchet head a little smaller. I got it cut out and ground and heat treated to day then ran out time and closed up the shop today but when I get the handle put on it I will test it out and post some pics of it.

Very cool! That handles looks extremely comfy to the hand. I'm going to have to find me a good hatchet one of these days...

They have not made that model for quite a few years. I think if Bryan decides to make some of those for sale, especially in 1/4", as the original is about 3/16" (hint, hint ;)) they will be a huge success, I know I would want one! I have one of the originals that my wife found in a small hardware store that has never had an edge put on it, they feel good in the hand, the perfect size IMHO.

Nice little Buck!
Who is E Krepts?
Any links or info on him?

Bryan, correct me if I`m wrong, but Kreps was another outdoorsman from the early 20th century. I got my books (reprints) from the Fur, Fish, and Game magazines years ago. They may or may not still be available. Bryan, forgive me if I`m hogging your thread, but I can`t keep from coming back to that hatchet!

Hi all Yep he was just like Dan Beard and kephart and warrien miller to many to name.
I have a book called Camping in the old style by david wescott. That is a great, great book. well i think LOL
As to the little hatchet I just love it and plan to make more if this one that I am making now works out. LOL John did you say that your hatchet, did it come sharp? or not?
I re read what you wrote but I am shocked if it did not. any ways no need to ask for for giveness LOL LOL I really like the feed back There is just some thing about the hatchet I think it just seems right to have one when woods walking. I hope that made sense. LOL I use my knife way more than the hatchet well LOL since it has that orange handle I do find that I am using it more It really feels more comfy than the old one. like I was saying I use my knife more than I have used a hatchet of any kind but it still just all ways comes along. I can chop with my 6" blade but not like I can with that little hatchet. any way thanks again all for the post back.

My hatchet was in the display case, it had never had an edge put on it from Buck. I like to think of it as an "unusual collector piece." It`s hardened, but no edge. I`m somewhat of a Buck collector, so I was thrilled when my wife brought it home for me. I also love and collect the old outdoors books, I`ve got around 20 now.
