It came! It finally came!! The mail always comes at 3 pm, and I checked at 3, 310, 324, 342, 355, 400, 406, 419, and it finally got here at 520. Whew! Good thing the mailbox is only a couple hundred feet away!

First, mega props to Blaine Perdue for a perfect description and wonderful sale. He was wonderful to deal with and patient with me taking a couple of days to get the money over to him. It can be hard to work around Heather's abscessed molar, my rotator cuff tear, and Caleb's 4 am Christmas morning trip to the ER for breathing trouble. But, everything worked out and we got it done. Good guy. Thanks Blaine.

Back in September I was gifted a clip main TC Barlow in red sawcut bone. I've carried it every single day without fail since. In fact, the only other time I've carried another knife was the Opinel #6 Carl gifted me a while ago and that was only while Heather and I went out for our anniversary, and that was in addition to the TCB. Needless to say I've grown quite attached to that little knife. Today, I oiled and lovingly wrapped it up in the wax paper and slid it back into the tube for a slight siesta. I thought until Caleb turns 10, then I'd give it to him, but it may be sooner. Let's just decide that it will be until he is old enough to need a good knife. It was a hard moment, let me tell you. It had a little bit of patina from the previous owner, but I didn't baby the knife and it was darkened considerably and had a few small nicks in the butt end bone and the bolsters were wearing beautifully. I grew to really like that knife.

However, I think this new knife will be perfect. I've made no secrets on this forum about loving equal end jacks. I think the EE jack is the pinnacle of pocket knife usefulness. Ok, maybe there is a slight problem with indexing the knife while it's still in your pocket, but other than that, its all good. I have eyed the White Owl for quite some time now, but first it was the bail (which I got over quickly) but then it was the pen style blade set up and the weak springs (neither of which I've ever gotten over.) I was super excited when GEC brought out the Pony Jack earlier this year. Excited, but I kind of figured I'd never own one. I enjoy looking, but we just didn't have the money at the time. I sold a few tools I didn't need, then used the money for bills that cropped up, saved some money then spent it on the kids or Heather. Then, I was gifted the TCB, and it was an honest knife that worked hard. I didn't need anything else. Oh sure, I looked, maybe "wanted", but never needed. Then, Heather told me to buy my own Christmas present, because obviously I'm "hard to buy for." Well, there was my chance. I looked at several BF supporting dealers, but then this one popped up on the sale board.

I am very impressed with this knife. It is a bit smaller than I thought it would be compared to the TCB. The 3.5" length is misleading because it is so slender. It was a pleasant surprise. A while ago I carried an EE Imperial cracked ice jack for a short time before gifting it to a young man who needed it. I was pleased to see this knife was very similar in size. It completely disappears in the pocket, which I like.

Very nice overall product.

Jigging looks good. I understand why they didn't use autumn gold bone on this one, but I wish they would have. I prefer it to antique yellow bone, but I think the antique yellow is/will grow on me as it darkens with time.

Blades are nicely centered in the blade wells.

There is a small gap in the spring/liner junction, but it doesn't let any light through, so it may be that someone let the spring get a bit rolled over on the corner during cleanup. Not a big deal, but it is there.

Looks excellent, the Pony Jack, is among the nicest Jackknives IMHO. Just a very cool pattern. Hope you carry it a many a miles.

Simply put, a great looking Jack knife!!!

Shes a beauty for sure...

Enjoy that one Medic...

Now for the nit-picky type stuff. Nothing here that will concern me at all, just interesting things to note.

The center pin is spun quite large, which I have seen and think is the normal on these knives. It leaves a little bit of the pin proud on the back side, which is a bit sharp. Not enough to cut anything, but it's there.

The bone is a little bit shy of the bolster, which makes that corner a little sharp. I think it will wear down and smooth out.

The pen spring is slightly rounded on one corner. And, this photo shows the gap on the main spring a bit better.

What do all these little "imperfections" mean to me? Absolutely nothing. I love this knife and I doubt I will even notice any of them in about 20 minutes.

Very nice. I like that pattern.
Yes it has a few flaws. I can only hope this is more an isolated issue, and not a sign of things to come from GEC. I highly doubt that is the case though.

Even with the "flaws", it is still a great knife, and will last a lifetime.

Very nice knife, I can see why you would want that so bad, mind you...it MUST have ben difficult to slip the Red Bone Clip-pint away - I feel those TC's are near the perfect knife - did you have the single blade version?

GEC are really on their way up and done seem to be looking back, well done GEC!

When it comes to looking over GEC's, I keep in mind just how much I paid for the knife and if its around the $100 for such a quality knife - the way the fit and finish is anyway, I overlook ( small ) gaps as such. I think we are so lucky to be able to buy such a great quality knife like you have for the amount of money - well done and what a great choice!!

Compared to the TCB.

The main blade is slightly narrower and less "clippy" than the TCB.

The pen blade is a bit shorter and fatter than the TCB.

Both blades open.

Kind of interesting to note, the swedge on the pen blade of the TCB is drawn and on the PJ it's cut. Cut all the way back to the plunge even.

The grinds on both blades of the PJ are pretty equal and symmetrical. No need for a picture on this one.

And finally, K-bob examining the knife that will be his. He was right next to me the entire time, from washing the pivots of the PJ, oiling the joints, putting the TCB to sleep, and taking all the pictures of the PJ. He kept asking, "you fixing the knife, Daddy? It broken?" He was quite concerned that there was a problem. He wanted me to open his knife so he could look at it before I put it away, but I told him no. It was WAY too sharp for a crazy three year old who won't keep clothes on. On the upside, he is finally potty trained as of this week! Woot woot! Only one in diapers finally!

Hopefully this little look will help someone else when they go to look at the pony jack. It sure is a winner in my book!

I think I need to clarify. I do not consider the "flaws" to be any big deal whatsoever. I only mentioned them because I have to be critical of something! This knife isn't a safe queen and is already in my pocket. I figure this will be the last knife I ever buy, so I'm not really worried about a couple of little things. Good, no great, knife for $70. Way more than twice the knife than a $35 knife and way more than a third the knife of a $210 knife. Good stuff from GEC for sure.

Mike, I hope you didn't take my post as a slate towards you for pointing out the faults, I thought your op was a a very complimentary one to GEC and the knife! :o

Oh no, I didn't take it that way at all. I did think I needed to clarify my position lest someone think that. I tore apart the knife like I'd tear apart one of mine I made. Like I said, just nitpicky stuff that means little.

Paul, I hope in a few years it looks as good as your lawn mowing peanut. That is one of my all time favorite knives I've ever seen posted.

I like both knives even though they're different in bone and bolster. I like the spear blade vice the clip though. Wear it out!

Great knife, I hope you will enjoy it. Not to pry, but it is curious to hear someone say they will not buy another knife. Any reason why?

Good looking knife you have there. I've been thinking about getting maybe the red rust or ebony. Still up in the air, and I hope they do another run with the pony jack.

Great looking knife you have there. I have the same knife myself. It was my first GEC and I am very pleased with it. I hope to give it some genuine pocket time in the coming year.

Well, lots I guess. Mostly, it's slowly become my personal philosophy. I collected razors (single edge, double edge, and straights) for a bit, but now I've sold off all I'd collected and have one SE, one DE, and one straight. I was going to buy another, nicer brush, but my $12 Omega is just fine. I accumulated knives for a while, but slowly I hosted giveaways here on this forum and in person and now I'm down to only knives that mean something to me personally. Mostly knives I've won here, been given from members on this forum, the SAK I bought for $2 on a trip with my wife, stuff like that. We don't have the money, and I don't have the inclination anymore, to spend even $50 a month on knives I don't need. My dad farms 1000 acres and all he's ever carried has been a Schrade lockback worth about $16. Works fine for him. My grandpa is the same way, except his is made by Gerber. I very much enjoy talking about knives and looking at people's collections, but it's not for me. Every day for the past three months I carried the barlow. It was the best knife I owned. I don't have beater knives and dress knives. Just a knife. Now the tcb I'd put back in its tube to rest until Caleb needs a good knife and I've got my pony jack. I'm content.

I am trying very hard to make pocket knives, so there's that, but even then, I'll likely make one I really like and carry only that one.

I think the ebony covers would look really great on this knife and give it a real "old world" feel. Good luck with your decision.

I hope you do. I know I am. See my little pony show thread. Lol
