My New Pony Jack

I have a Pony Jack in ebony and it is one of my favorite knives. Yours looks fantastic. Enjoy it!

...We don't have the money, and I don't have the inclination anymore, to spend even $50 a month on knives I don't need...
I am to this point as well. I'm planning on using what I have rather than adding any more to the pile. I don't think I want to do the "only carry one knife" challenge, though the idea of a month-long rotation period has some appeal.

I too have this same knife. At first I was a bit underwhelmed with the coloring of the bone....but it has grown on me in a big way! The fit and finish on my Pony is near flawless, my only complaint is a pretty weak spring on the pen. I too recognized the pins sitting a bit too proud, but I carefully took a Dremel to them and they sit pretty flush now. For the most part, this knife resides in my pocket primarily when I spell my ebony Calf Roper (a couple of days a week...like today).

Enjoy that knife and put it to work!

Great looking knife, Brian! Indeed!

I know what you mean about waiting - but here it´s sometimes of weeks. LOL!

I´m sure you´ll enjoy that wonderful Pony Jack. A great looking pattern.

Thanks for your response, all valid reasons and I tend to agree with you. I also enjoy looking at other people's collections, but I am no collector myself.

I don't have beater knives and dress knives. Just a knife. Now the tcb I'd put back in its tube to rest until Caleb needs a good knife and I've got my pony jack. I'm content.

What a great place to be mind-wise Mike, I find myself amassing quite a few knives - and sometimes I think - wow, what am I going to do with all of these knives! I cant use them all, but then when something really nice comes up, I think...ooh I got to have that :o

I think you got a beautiful equal end jack in this Pony! Like the jiggin a lot on these.

I have the same attraction to equal-end knives, so not quite by chance I happen to also have that same knife. I love the yellow bone handles, but mine has the spear point.

On mine though I haven't noticed those "imperfections" you pointed out. Could be that my eyes aren't as sharp as yours. :)

However, I think this new knife will be perfect.

Medic's My Little Pony Show-- A One Knife Challenge

As far as problems, I will say that my pj is pretty thick behind the edge, which drives me crazy, and has a very slight recurve that was only noticeable after sharpening for the first time, now you can really see it. Also, my pen almost made it impossible to get to the main nick. Poor design in my opinion. My tc barlow was wonderful in that regard, even almost pinchable. My pj cannot be pinched open. The thick blade is the big drives me crazy point though. I'm overall not as happy with the fit and finish of the pj versus my tcb.

I like my pj, but daily wonder if maybe I shouldn't just go back to the tc barlow and move this one on. Maybe I'll make a separate thread, I'm rambling now. Time for sleep.

Not to derail the conversation from the op's original topic, but here goes. I consider the thick edge and recurve to be just like the poor nick access, bad design and execution. I shouldn't have to sharpen out a recurve on a new knife, and the edge being thick is a huge turn off for me. It will sharpen out to a certain degree but not really. It will still always be thicker behind the edge than it should be. Again, just bad execution. It makes the little knife that should act like a laser act clunky and awkward. I may regrind it, or I may just put it in the tool box and figure it out later. Color me disgusted and incredibly disappointed at the very least.

An unexpected progression.

Believe me, it was unexpected to me too. It's the blade being thick behind the edge that bothers me. I'll probably just regrind it and it will be fine. Oh well. It's still in my pocket, where it will likely remain for the foreseeable future. I guess I was just complaining. Thin edges are a pet peeve of mine, someone else might not have even noticed.

Looks like you have a stalker, medic. :D

She is incredibly good at locating threads isn't she? If you say "I think I might have written something about a little black knife five years ago," she will be back ten minutes later with the thread quote. It's awesome. Lol.

Btw, I pulled out the tcb a few minutes ago. I still like the pj. It is still "my knife." I need more sleep or less time in this house. I hurt my shoulder and ice been of for almost a month now and likely to be off for six+ months more now. Rotator cuff or labrum tear. MRI the end of the month and I'll know more.

Also, Caleb saw the very end of the tcb tube in my hand as I carried through the house and immediately started crowing to "hold the knife. I hold it, I hold it daddy." The kid has eyes like an eagle and the energy of a lab puppy. He's awesome. My little buddy.

I have a very similar pony jack. Only mine has the spear instead. I love the knife and want another.

Medicevans, I got my Pony Jack out of the tube to take a look see. Mine looks just about like yours. It has a full-flat-grind blade from the fairly sturdy spine down to a nice edge, with a factory micro-bevel that was very sharp out of the tube, didn't need sharpening.

I compared it to the hollow-ground blades of my Case knives and there's no doubt, the FFG is thicker behind the edge and keeps getting thicker all the way back to the spine, as designed. That should make it a great all-purpose sturdy knife. But if you don't like that kind of blade, then you may have some work to do making it into what you want.

When I first got the Pony Jack (my first GEC) I was very enthusiastic about it. I'm sure Sarah will find the post ;) where I mentioned it could be my "one knife", which she called out then too, me being somewhat of an avowed Case knife addict. I never got around to carrying it, though, so other than ooh-ing and aah-ing at the beauty and workmanship of it when I first got it, and again just now, it's still doing shelf duty.

I hope to live long enough to give all of my knives a good bit of pocket time. I've got a GEC #15 Boys Jack in my occasional carry rotation, and it's similar enough to me that for now that's my go-to when I feel like a GEC in the pocket.

So maybe it's not the right choice for you if you need a hollow-ground super thin slicer, but it sure seems like a pretty good all-around knife to me (again, from looking at my own version of it).

I think there were some comments about the nail nicks. I've never had any problems with opening any of my GEC knives. Sometimes you have to come in at a bit of an angle, but none of them are hard enough to get to that I would have even noticed it, had not the various forum posts about it made me take a second look.

so i somehow missed this progression!

sorry to hear about the My Little Pony Woes (from now on knowns as MLPW) :/

That makes sense. What caught my attention were the extremes, the quick "The One" designation (complete with your pointers in other threads to look up your "My My Little Pony" thread to "... disgusted." So, I noted the progression, and then it got spooky 'round here. :p

You rang? ;)

Well I can finally contribute to this type of conversation, as I am a newly minted GEC knife owner, just having received my first GEC yesterday, a #68 Pony Jack, clip blade antique yellow jigged bone version.

All I can say about it is "Wow!" I think that it could become my "one knife." As much as I like my Case knives, I think it'll be GEC for me for any future purchases.

Wow. I'm glad you like your knife, and like it that much. :)

I had/have noted and admire your fondness for (and good taste in) Case knives, and thus your initial response to your Pony Jack was... note-worthy to me. If that's a "calling out," so be it. :)

(But it would seem my surprise was not ungrounded, as your Pony Jack has yet to cross the 'carry' line? Lest my tone be misunderstood in text, I intend no snark in the question. I've learned for myself that the true test of a knife's "place" in my selection is not initial enthusiasm, but whether or not I carry it over and against other choices, over time. Plus, we do tend to remain true to ourselves, though it might take some working out to understand what that means.)
