My new psk (medium pic density)

I revised my older PSK which fit into a small Eclipse can which is even smaller than an Altoids tin. I have to shamefully admit that I was caught up into the whole pack as much as you can as small as you can. I know the philosophy that if its not small you wont carry it but the amount of time and money spenton this... IM CARRYING IT! Also because it works.

After looking at Mike Spinaks kit and Michel Blomgrens videos I've realised that bigger might very well be better. So closely following Michel Blomgrens setup I constructed my own.

First a group shot -

Contents are:
1st Large Ziplock-
First aid - Alcohol prep pads, assortment of bandaids, large bandage
10 water purification tablets

2nd Large Ziplock-
12 PJ cotton swabs. I opted for the swaps because they are already flat and can lie flat in the kit rather than lumping it into gaps and potentially leaky. (its the ziplock at the bottom)

Duct tape
Sguidgies/ bait
Type 1 Paracord
Razor Blade (medical, fine tasks)
Char Cloth
Fishing line wound on small strip of credit card with a notch cut in.
Thread also wound on notched credit card
Suunto clipper
Filed down Fox 40 (note that if you remove the nob at the back it leaves a hole which needs to be filled if the nob is removed)

Small vial containing 3 hooks, 3 hooks with include a sinker attached and a little hook to hold bait on, 4 sinkers, 3 heavy duty needles with large threading holes.

10 tinder quicks
Large ferro rod + carbon steel striker (good for flint)
Photon
The new OHT trekker, didnt know I was getting the new one which has the slightly more robust blade and larger hole. Both great plusses also includes tweezers and toothpick.
BCB Mini mess tin

First layer in, the PJ swabs are on the very bottom to preven the items puncturing it and to stop the rattling. First aid on top and the razor blade. Very thin!

Next layer packed in ( I managed to rearrange the little items on the right so a mini bic is also included... pics if it stops raining)-

Finally -

All packed up (the strap comes with the suunto clipper and helps hold it down better because after the bic was added the fox 40 pushes the little so the rubber seal doesnt contact well)

The tin is from BCB called the mini mess tin, it comes with a thick rubber seal which has a little rubber tab so it can be removed and used as a lid for boiling.

Any comments or recommendations are welcome!

I always include a few of those single serve powdered drink mixes in my kit. (Crystal Light peach tea is my favorite). It makes any water taste better and it doesn't take up any space in the kit.

Very nice! Could you include a link to were you got the container, and what it's dimensions are?
And is the suunto clipper the compass?

Nick Nack,

Great kit, looks well thought out. How heavy is it? How do you carry it?

Last summer I was using single serve Powerade powder. They are about the size of a short drinking straw or those pixie sticks we ate as kids.

:eek:very nice... i like that set up...

can you cook and/or boli water in that tin.....

I bought the majority of the gear (including the tin) you see from greenmanbushcraft.co.uk, he said that he normally only ships to the UK using the webisite but if you email him he will set you up. Great service from him!
The rest of the gear comes from my old PSK which I got from edcdepot.com.

Yes the Suunto clipper is the compass, its meant to clip to that velcro strap around the PSK or can be used on your webbing straps or watchband.

Dims. for the tin are - 13 x 9.5 x 3cm (5" x 3.5" x 1")

Thanks! Im not sure how heavy it is but its definately not lightweight, but it works out ok in cargo pockets but not when you're running. It might go in the backpack because most of the gear in there I have in my pockets as well (except for the tin). I know for a fact that the tin itself weighs 4oz.

Yes it can bee cooked in but the rubber seal that keeps it water proof has to be removed. BUt that is easily done because it even comes with a little tab for you to pull it out with. Its a very robust thick piece of rubber thats about 1cm thick (not all the way).

Very nice kit and I was going to ask if you carried other gear besides, just in case you lost your kit. Good one all the way around.

I too think a larger kit is a better idea. I like that mess tin, looks like it can still fit in a cargo pocket pretty easily.

Looks a great little kit bro !!!!

Being an ex-Brit I have to agree with the comment earlier though...it needs some tea bags !!!

http://www.bushcraft.se/ - check out his site!
Hes got about 6 vids but most are in swedish but there are subtitles. I downloaded them all and put them on my psp for "on the road' use. but you can watch them off google video. He seems to really know his stuff.
