i recently purchased a CR small sebenza w/ african blackwood inlays. i havent done anything with the knife yet, until today. i took it out of the box and was admiring it, what a beauty! But as i took a really good look at it, i noticed a scratch on the top of the handle! Now im not a complainer but when i fork over four bills for a knife i expect it to be perfect! i have emailed the online company that i purchased it from so i guess ill wait and see how they respond. Do i have a legitimate complaint here or do some CR knives come like this? :(

I wouldn't expect that myself. I'm sure the dealer or CRK will take care of it. It's too bad you ran into a problem.

I moved this to the Chris Reeve forum.

You have a compliant IMHO. Even if you decide to carry it, one of our rights of passage is to put the first love mark on a $400 knife the likes of a CRK. It must have been out of the box at the dealer because I can't imagine CRK letting a scratched knife through the inspection. I have carried nice knives for weeks and months that showed no wear so out of the box is not what I would be 100% satisfied with.

Pursue a replacement and don't feel guilty. Let the dealer send it in for a Spa treatment and get yourself another brand new looking Sebenza.

I would be willing to bet it did not leave CRK that way.

Depending on how bad the scratch is, I would ask for a discount. If you are really going to carry it, I could live with a small scratch if they gave me some money back.

Legit complaint in my book. I have purchased (all online) 11 CRK's, and they all arrived flawless. I have ordered from New Graham, True North, OnlyFineKnives, Knife Art, Plaza Cutlery, and Peas&Corn Co. Not one imperfection (other than the typical variations in wood coloration, which is to be expected).

However, I do always insist that the knife I am being sent was never on display. It's possible that your knife was on display and handled by idiots (and that can include customers and store staff). In any case, if I were you, I'd contact your seller and explain the situation. If it's any of the sellers I mentioned above, you shouldn't have any issues - that is if "recently" in your post means only a few days. The problem is that you didn't thoroughly inspect your knife (apparently) when you first received it. If it's been more than a couple of days, your seller may think there's a chance that you put the scratch there. I thoroughly inspect all my new knives as soon as they arrive. If there's a flaw, I send it back the same day. That way there's little question that the flaw existed upon arrival.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Chris reeve knives has a " mile" long checklist before anything leaves. I would say it got boogered up at the dealer... Bummer call Chris Reeve knives and im almost sure they will fix it and ask for the name of the dealer

Contact the dealer and they should exchange/refund. Not a warranty issue since it's brand new.

Got the knife from knivesshipfree.com. I have emailed them but no response yet. i guess its my fault for not thoroughly checking it over when i first got it! think its going to be a $400 learning lesson! ugh! when and if i get a response i will let u guys know! thank you guys!!

Striderco,

Knivesshipfree.com is a GREAT company. I'm sure you will be taken care of, I wouldn't worry...

glad to hear that highpower1! havent heard from them yet, but Chris Reeves has already responded and they want to know how it is handled! They are certainly on top of things there!!

I would put it in my pocket and use it.

What else are you going to do? Send it back, receive a new knife, and then proceed to carry it and scratch it again? Seems redundant to me.

i hear ya 5.56! But if you bought a brand new caddy and it had a scratch on it would you just drive it cause it would probably get scratched someday anyways?

Probably.

How long did you have the knife before you noticed this?

I say you just go ahead and use that sucker. No sense in going through all of the trouble only to end up using it in the end. I doubt you're going to cherish the memory of your knife's first scratch so just stick it in your pocket. Now, if it were a gouge, or something more serious, it would be a different story...
