My new small Sebenza does not have the new modifications?

I just purchased a small Sebenza (Dec 99 manufacture) that does not have the recent modifications mentioned here to the handle and lock. I bought it hoping it would have those. When do you expect to have those modifications ready in both the large and small Sebenzas? Is there any way I could trade?

I also wonder about this. I had a Aug 99 Large Sebenza and it did not have the new lock machining. It was stated here on the forum, by CRK, that the new mods were implemented on ALL Sebenzas from like June/July 99 on. I was wondering if the "New" ones since that June/July changeover that still have the old style lock...are actually knives people have returned/traded in to CRK and they have been refurbished. Not trying to start any rumors here, just what I personally wondered.

I was waiting for an official explanation from CRK on the other thread in this forum where this subject was brought up before, but it never was addressed. Maybe CRK will explain on this thread??? Thanks.

JeffJ, you should contact CRK, I bet they will be willing to make you happy. I have a Large born on 07/29/99 that precedes the change, so I think it happened sometime after that. I know that there was some crossove when they changed the blade steel and handle profile, so they might have had a similar situation occur.

I thought Chris very recently said that they weren't happy with the change and went back to the former style within the last month or two. I think he said that there was nothing wrong with the different bar, nor was it any weaker, just that they felt it didn't offer significant advantages, so they changed back. I'm sure they will do whatever they can to make you happy, but I don't think that they are currently being produced or will be in the future.

pojim,
I believe that the change that CR was talking about was that the two grooves on the inside of the lock bar were to be added again (the wood inlays had the new clip cutout but not the two grooves). So the change is that the two grooves are added along with the clip cutout area.

Can CRK relieve the bar so I can get my clip on thick clothes? I know with the winter wool uniform trousers, my clip angles away from the material.

Jeff,

Does your Sebenza have the cut out under the clip, to allow for thicker clothing?

I have a small that was made 8/26/99 and it doesn't have the cutout under the clip. I would think they could make two size clips, one for thick material and one for thin.

JoHnYKwSt,

In answer to your question...no. The modification to the clip is also not there. The knife is the old style. I have two others (Small) from this summer and they are the same style.

Hmmm...this is curious that we haven't had an official word yet from Anne or Chris.

jj

Jeff,
I believe that Anne posted that they would be in South Africa for the holidays. I'm sure they will answer your question as soon as they get back and have time to get things back in order. I was wondering where you bought your new Sebenza. Could it be that the person you bought it from accidently put an older one in a new box? I bought a Sebenza from a dealer at a show and I think he put it in the first box that he could find under the table. It kind of makes the certificate pointless, but doesn't really bother me.

Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

Yes indeed! Chris and Anne are still playing on vacation! Answers to the question will come shortly. Thanks for your patience.

Mark, maybe you could have given some information too - I'm sure you know more as I just got email from you

(Sorry to quote you without prior approval from you. I'll take the quote out now. If it's ok by you I'll add it back)
The situation nevertheless is that CRK has made handles before that they still have in their inventory. (I also think that Anne has said the same thing when she was asked about the numbers inside the handles, and why they didn't match the year when the knife was born - This is from my memory) They are using those handles as well as the more current handles. So that's why even though your knife was born after the new modification it could still have handle made prior to the modification.
BTW, my Sebenza was born on November 11th 1999 and it doesn't have the cutout - and that's just the way I like it

Well Hugo the reply was fine by me, nothing bad to say there...If a reply of any kind was given by a factory rep. they are fully aware that they represent their company at all times and that the "word" will get around.

CR Knives with me is 1st class all the way! If anyone has a preference of which one they want just ask. I got my Sebenza from KnifeArt and I ask Larry C. before he sent it out which style it was first...I too wanted the new style and thats what I got.

ThomM - you are correct. Even though in this case I did think like Keith said, that it was an official word from CRK, I should not have done it without asking approval. I'll email Mark and if he thinks it's OK, I'll put the quote back, but until then it's gone. I wanted to quote him so that you guys that are wondering about your knives would know the origin of my info and would know to trust it.
Mark - Sorry for the quote.

Hugo.

Still curious about this but I suppose that I am now competing with the SHOT Show. So, I am sending it back to the top.

I must apologize to Hugo for not responding to his question in a timely fashion. As jeffj said, we are "competing with the SHOT Show." Please accept my most humble apology.
The modifications that we make to the Sebenza line are completely at our discretion. We are constantly researching and improving to make our knives in such a way that you, as the customer, benefit the most from these changes. The modification being referred to here is the relief area under the clip. Following is the response that I e-mailed to Hugo, "The number on the inside of the handle, in your case 'A 99', is in fact a batch number that is used for internal purposes. It is merely used as a reference point for the beginning of a process.
About the cutout under the clip, that was added in July 1999. The fact that you received a Sebenza without a cutout is this…our inventory still includes handle backs that do not have the cutout and for various reasons certain backs have been held for assembly at future dates. So, to make good use of our inventory, we send out both styles and it is at random which style a customer receives. Please feel confident that you have purchased a new knife. We do not send out used knives as new."
As Keith mentioned, I am a representative of Chris Reeve Knives and, as being such, I am wholly responsible for the content of my responses. Please note, however, that if I am lacking in my understanding of the question, I will do my research to give a qualified answer. Thanks to all of you for your patience. The activity on the forum is great! I enjoy every minute of reading the responses!
Sincerely,
Mark

Hmmm...

This still doesn't answer my original question (seems to have been lost and forgotten).

My point being that I want a small and large Sebenza WITH the modifications. I just purchased a 12/99 dated small with NO modifications. When can I be guaranteed to purchase one and get the modifications?

jj

Jeff, I believe Mark did answer your question. The reason you got an small sebenza with no modification is because they had handles left over that did not have the modification done. If you want a sebenza with a modification then the best way is to ask before you buy. If you are truly unhappy that your sebenza does not have the modification, then I would try to exchange it with one that has the modification with whomever you bought it from.

Johnny,

Perhaps you are partly right, but I would like some clarification on the Large Sebenza also. Read my original and my current post. I would also like to know when it is more certain, since most dealers I have bought from don't have a selection! Like I said I think that my original question was lost. Besides, I also asked if I could trade it for one with modifications, i.e., send it to CR in exchange. Thanks for trying.
