My new storage system -- Pelican case -- nothing new but wow!

I finally bought a Pelican case for my knife storage. I know this isn't really anything new -- many people store their knives in Pelican cases -- but I am so happy with it I had to share. It was so easy to work with the foam to create the spaces and it's so convenient and secure. I bought the Pelican 1520 and there's easily plenty space for my whole collection and even my biggest folders (BM810 / ZT0560) fit with ease -- height-wise. What an upgrade to how I'm storing my collection!

They're great aren't they. Here's my 1600.

Nice collection, btw!

I don't mean to denigrate Pelican cases but they strike me as overkill for folder storage...not to mention that they're extremely expensive and somewhat inaccessible. I hang my Spyderpacs on my wall where I can easily see and choose whichever folder I want with no fuss whatsoever. I even use them to store small fixed blades. If I run out of room a new Spyderpac only costs about 30 dollars,

I like how portable that would be, but I don't like how you can't really see the knives. I own several knives that are the same with different scales and I couldn't tell them apart in that case.

I disagree (obviously, since I chose that route). They aren't cheap, but compared to my collection, they are not that expensive. And my collection is far more accessible stored in a single case like I showed than it was in a bin full of individual boxes. It give atmospheric protection (which is not all that necessary where I live), it keeps them protected from being banged around, and I can lock it with some padlocks and cable to a radiator or something. I bought larger than I needed so that I would have room for expansion, and if I ever get to the point where mine is full, I probably won't mind spending the coin on another one.

Wow I had not seen these either! I could hang one on the inside of my gunsafe - great option.

Thanks for posting photos of your setups. I was thinking about how I could do the same thing with my fixed blades but I only have a couple so I'm not sure if I need a whole case dedicated to fixed blades. I especially like the photo with all the knives open -- I need to get one like that!

My previous storage system was two of the large spyderpacs. The problem I had with this system was that I don't really have a way to hang them on the wall so I kept them stored folded. It was really annoying folding and unfolding them all of the time when I wanted to look at or play with something. Since they were folded it's not like they were on display or visible to me anyway. I don't really have too much trouble identifying a knife I'm looking for in this system. There are several that look very similar but I'm starting to develop a system around this. I also really like that they're all in one container. It was pretty expensive so that's definitely a drawback but I think it was worth every penny to have something very well organized, awesome looking, and very secure.

How do you keep moisture under control locked up in that Pelican (waterproof) case? I like the pics. The system seems secure to an extent, and the pics are definitely high on the cool scale. It seems you would need to control the humidity and moisture somehow unless you live in a very arid region. It appears from what I can see that possibly all the knives are stainless. Or is the case just for transport? Just curious. Very nice collections posted. I'm jealous. :D

Great pics - have seen a lot of impressive collections here and on Youtube stored in a Pelican case. Tough and well-made (in the USA to boot) for sure. Considering the dollar value of what these cases often contain, $100 or $150 for the storage is not too much to ask. Having all of the folders in one place for quick access beats individual knife boxes in a bin or shelf any day in my opinion. I have a Countycomm tool roll that I used but these Pelicans are far more robust. Best option unless you have a big ol' gun safe - that is my first choice.

Knives are dangerous and should be kept out of reach from the little ones. The Pelican case can be locked and it's discreet. Having them on display would be nice, but I don't like to advertise my valuables should my place ever be broken into. Also I can fit about 30 knives in mine, and thats where I draw the line. If they can't all fit, then someone has to go. And should I ever stop all this madness and sell my whole collection except for one, then I can put something else in the case. A good quality, heavy duty case has a million uses.

That's a good question -- one I honestly didn't think too much about. I'm going to need to look into this more since this is not just for transport but my solution for long term storage. Most or all of the knives in my collection are very corrosion resistant and I do live in a very arid region but I definitely need to be absolutely sure that this case isn't going to trap moisture inside.

You can always just pick up some silica gel or DriRite and keep it in a corner (or spread out on the bottom of the case). You can find those or similar desiccants at gun stores, or online. If you keep the case closed as much as possible you'll only need to change out the desiccant once or twice a year, especially if you live in an arid area.

Agreed. Honestly unless you have a lot of knives that rust really easy, you should be fine in most places that aren't crazy humid. Also, I would imagine most people would be keeping this in a closet or indoor space that is air-conditioned to some degree. Desiccant packs are a good idea. Also Pelican cases have a water-proof but air/water-vapor permeable gore-tex valve to equalize internal pressure without allowing water in.
