My new survival kit

I like the water bag from survival resources (bepreparedtosurvivedotcom) it is very sturdy and has gromets so you can sling it over a shoulder with cord.

Nice set up, I like the Otter Box. I have a question about the little pry bar.

Are the very sturdy? I have not personally seen one of the County Comm ones but I have seen others that bend when you try to remove a small nail from wood.

Thanks for the comments and it's a 4" prybar from CountyComm. Those prybars are really thick for their size and will not bend, they are extremely strong. Craftsman also makes one that's about 5-5 1/2" that is great also that I also have hanging on my bug out bag.

nice kit and nice collection!

I agree a small container to boil water would be useful- I'd skip tin foil though- too unreliable in my experience. Instead look at your supermarket for the small bread aluminum bread "tins"- they come three to a pack and fold very flat, they are also pretty tough

I also agree a mini-bic is well worth the volume it would occupy- if you add one get an appropriate size o-ring or a small zip tie so there is no way for the button to be depressed (until your ready to use it)

also consider fabbing a hacksaw blade knife instead of a razor blade- if will cut and can also also be used a striker- takes up almost no room and you can make it exactly to length

here's the one that goes in my wallet

Since I have plenty of chlorine dioxide tabs to clean the water I'm not to concerned with being able to boil the water. The case is not very big, if I took the 1 quart water bag out the bread tin wouldn't be able to fit inside at all. It is MAXED out in what I can fit in there other than sqeezing a folding razor blade / hacksaw blade in there and that would be it.

I Bet.... LOL :D Ideas run rampade but no room in pelican for the extra's.... been there ;)

Doc - can't explain his need for a disposable handcuff key, or how he'll access it if he's cuffed, but I can confirm that salmon eggs are bait.

Be better taped inside his waistband, but the plastic WILL get you through being wanded, and most detention types will overlook it, even when they have you change into a jumpsuit.

You know how it goes, some of us don't play well with others.;)

My Arrowheads came in the mail today and I was able to squeeze one of them in the kit! :)

ok, survival situation, we have an AH1 in our kit.. and our favorite fixed blade plus a junglas/lite machete.

What do we do with the AH1.. use it as a striker on the fire steel.. fabricate a bow and arrow for passing the time while trying to survive, that thing is pretty as hell and i like to play with it but besides that, i dont see much use for it that my RC3 can't do. You going to make yourself a spear for defense ? im gonna use the junglas for that! I carry at the very least, an izula everyday.. if i get lost right now, i would have my izula which is more versatile that the AH1.. and unless you are carrying your pelican 1010 in your jeans pocket 24/7 like i do with my izula.. you would not have any cutting tool anyway. better than nothing if you happen to have the kit .. but i will never have the kit without a good fixed blade in my case.

enlighten me now!

I carry my kit and my bug out bag everywhere with me if I leave the house so do they. The arrowhead is much more versitle I think that what you are giving it credit for. It can be used as a small knife, a firesteel stiker, and also to use on a spear. We've already had a post on the forum with Shotgunner getting the first kill with it (a snake). I'm usually wearing shorts with cargo pockets and the kit fits right inside with no issues. Of course the AH-1 isn't as nice as having an Izula but you won't fit an Izula inside this case. I also carry my Izula on me everyday along with my Leatherman Wave, so I have the knives on me they're just not in the box.

Great little kit you have there.

One thing I would add no matter what, is bug juice. I use a small used bottle that water treatment tablets come in, and fill it with 100% Deet. It holds enough to easily get you through a night or two of being stuck outside and really that's what the kit is for 99% of the time. There is nothing worse than spending the night out in the bush and then being eaten alive by bugs.

Even an MRE Tabasco bottle will be enough for your face and hands for a night. Plus you can just kind of dab it around on yourself and rub it in. It doesn't just pour out or possibly spill. My bottles are old and from the 80's, so I know they work and the Deet doesn't break down the plastic cap. You might want to run a test on some of the new bottles before throwing it in your kit, or just use something other than Deet. Just a thought here. In any case, dip any bottle's cap in wax to seal it.

The zip lock bags are not really something I would use for my water. I found that I can custom make my bags to fit any kit using the vacuum sealer Food Saver bags. They are a little heavier and A LOT tougher. I make a neck on them about 3'' long and then twist it and fold it over and use a twist tie to seal it up. Works fine and is easy to repair with duct tape.

I really like those arrow heads ESEE has come out with. For me it replaces a single edge razor blade which I have always hated. Really, all a razor blade does is cut you and not what you're trying to cut. It makes a poor striker, you can't really notch anything, they dull fast and the edge is easily damaged and you can't sharpen them. They do a good job cleaning fish though, that's about it as far as I can see, and they're better than nothing.

I think the arrow head would be great for spear fishing and if you miss spearing the fish, the arrow head can now becomes a great gaff hook and maybe you can gaff them and lift them out of the water??? It gives you two chances at catching it. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud here. My point is, the arrow head looks like it has a place in any kit.

If I was to do anything to the AH-1, I would drill a small hole, say .035'' to .050'' or so in the shank part, and use it to cut wire. You could stick any size wire you could ever want to carry in the hole and then grab the head part or even stick it into a stump so you don't cut yourself and bend it or the wire back and forth until the wire said uncle and broke in half. That way you are not using the edge of the AH-1 to cut a length of wire to attach the AH-1 to make a spear, snare or whatever. Since almost every kit has wire, it's nice to have a way to cut it with some ease and safety for you and your tools edge.

edge.

The water bag isn't a ziplock bag, it's a 1 Quart water bag from www.bepreparedtosurvive.com. It's tall and round shaped just like a Nalgene bottle and was designed to fit inside survival kits / bug out bags and what not. They are thicker than ziplocks and seal at the top by a twist tie that's built into it. They fold up real small and work great for kits.

^ I'm using the same bags in my small kits, good little bags :)

when I'm even more cramped for space I found the 16 oz MRE hot beverage bags work pretty well

Just to add a little point... i will add an AH1 to my kit.. and think its usefull but my point was pretty much.. it will not perform better than a fixed esee knife .. especially if you never go out of the house without a knife..

I have that as well.
I purchased one bag and one kit.
The kit comes with a piece of plastic shaped like a coffee filter and a number of filters too. The plastic piece supports the filter so you can prefilter the water. It also include 10 Katadyn chlorine dioxide tablets.

I find that two bags gives me the ability to have one bag ready for use while the second bag is processing fresh water with the tablets (it needs 4 hours for the best results eliminating critters). Two bags and 10 tablets gives me sufficient water for a 72 hour kit.
