This is one of the most ugly tools that I've ever seen, but one of the most practical choppers that I've ever owned. Much better than my Kershaw camp axe. It's called the Woodsman's Pal. It's made of high carbon steel. The edge is convex like an ax and is very well balanced. I had the opportunity of using it today and it's a beast. Heavy, but well balanced to where the weight just follows through powerfully into the chop. The sickle hook comes in very handy for getting all the smaller branches off the larger limbs. It also makes very comfortable contact with the wood when chopping. This thing is no joke. Cleaned up good too.

I am always far more concerned and focused on performance and the utilitarian aspects of tools vs. if the look pretty. That includes knives and hawks/hatchets. That Woodsman Pal looks exactly like a tool meant to be used and perform well and do so for a long time.

If you are out in the wilds trying to hack up some wood to get fire going nobody is going to care about it's profile or visual flow. I have always been a function over form person and always will be.

Any idea why (what looks like) the last half inch at the tip of the main is not sharpened?

Is the "hook" part chisel ground or double? same for main blade.

Last question, is the handle stacked leather?

Neat looking chopping tool anyway.

Handle is stacked leather and very comfortable. Chisel ground for the sickle hook, main blade is not. I don't know why the tip of the main blade isn't sharpened. I plan on modifying that.

Good call. I'd probably correct that too.

Another qusetion: I've never handled one with the "D" guard. Does it get in the way when using the sickle side?

Here's some good reading on the WWII recommendations for your new toy: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/4933/woodsmanspal.html .

Enjoy and thanks for the review.

Haven't noticed the guard getting in the way. I have done alot of reading on it for the last two days. Very informative stuff. I also found out just now that some of the older models were sharpened at the top. I can see that being very helpful. That may be something else I modify.

Seen those advertised for years , they look handy.

It seems folks either love them or hate them.

they have been around for along time and you scored a excelent blade,I almost bought one but for some odd reason my RTAKII has yet to let me down.... and yes the sickle part is handy for cutting and moving all in one motion of sticker vines and etc. I have a machete with a similiar sickle action on the back side that will slice and dice and remove the discarded limbs afterwards.. blunt tip is for safety & if you mod it there goes the warranty.

I have one as well. They're awesome. I had thought about modifying mine too. Very practical tool.

A chopper with a good factory edge? Not bad.
Looks very sheeple friendly, not a good thing in itself, but you know it was designed to be used, not to scare people or hang on the wall.

Turning the clock back a number of years, the Woodsman's Pal was an extremely popular knife in Viet Nam back in the 60's and early 70's. It's had a loyal following among folks who wander the woods and bush for many decades now. Both the stacked leather handled one with the guard and the guardless wood-scaled handled version are very useful brush tools!

I got a red x when I opened this thread. Here is what I got my wife for christmas this year. It is a benchmade folder with PINK handle scales she just loves the color pink. If she loses it hopefully we could fined it being the color it is.

Last year I got my wife the Case Raspberry collection. They have a beautiful pinkish hue. I remember it costing me over $800, but it was worth every to see the smile on her face.
