I just got a classic inlaid Sebbie yesterday. The birth certificate says this it is ebony but the dealer that I bought it from says that he sold another one like it and that the other one was English walnut. Is it possible that someone at CR Knives accidentally wrote the wrong wood down. Was my baby switched at birth? I'd post a pic but my gold membership apparently just ran out.

Not all Ebony is solid black, I have one knife with "figured Ebony" that is medium brown with lighter streaks. Several different species of wood are commonly called Ebony.

I also have a small Classic Sebenza with wood inlays that state "Madagascar Rosewood" it is mainly medium brown with dark fine streaks and looks more like English Walnut than any Rosewood I have ever seen. I like the wood figure and color, very unique.

Take a photo and send it to CRK, Bridget and Lisa will tell you the wood species.

Regards,
FK

I have a small wood classic in the works and waiting on that myself! love the look and feel of those a lot!

As to your wood question...hmmm
Ebony has a harsh bitter smell when burnt where Walnut has a mellower overall smell when put to the fire...but that is an extreme way of checking...;)

Hello,

There are only two types that I know are called "Ebony". There are possibly a few more, but I only know of these two.

Macasar Ebony.......it has lighter black waves and figuring to the coloring and grain.

Black Ebony....... This is what most folks think of when "Ebony Wood" is mentioned. It is jet black all the way thru.

Thanks, JC :)
