My new ZDP-189 Delica scares me.

For some reason the thought of reprofiling this blade scares me. Now I know how Sisyphus must have felt when going to work.

Cool pic:). I've never seen one of those.

Oh yeah, face your fears- regrind it:thumbup:

Cool pictures! But reprofiling ZDP-189 isn't as bad as you might think. It is not any worse than S30V probably even easier. It sharpens beautifully though - practically no burr.

That is good to know. I was not sure if they had made the steel softer to make it easier to sharpen. At that hardness, I bet a serrated blade could go a long time between sharpenings.

Thanks for posting the photos of a machine I'm sure a lot of us think about, but have never seen! Interesting....

I used my Sharpmaker (with the diamond rods) to do a reprofiling, and it wasn't bad at all. I was afraid to start, at first. :-)

The ZDP-189 sure takes a nice polish and really shines!

Stay sharp,

Tom Krein has regrinded a few ZDP Delica(s) and Endura(s) to full flat grind :D The users were more than satisfied with the result. ;)

I reprofiled my Endura ZDP from the factory 15 per side to 10 per side in only a few minutes with my DMT XX Coarse and heavy pressure. Just use the right abrasive and even ZDP can be ground away pretty fast. If you have it reground by Tom Krein to full flat grind you will love it. Mine cuts much better now with the much thinner blade and edge, and sharpening goes real quick.

Mike

PS, my Endura was Rockwell tested to 63 RC.

Get a belt sander it makes it a lot easier. I thinned out my caly JR. zdp and it is a light saber.

I've thinned and sharpen my Cal. jr. with a DC4 Fallkniven stone. Easy, light pressure on the diamond side, tiny burr, same job on the ceramic side, somes strops on soft leather. Have to take a band aid when testing on your thumb.

Why reprofile the edge? Doesn't Spyderco put a sharp-enough edge on their knives before they leave the factory. For me, every blade has been super sharp.

Personal preference for a thinner grind. Why did you have your emerson reground?

98-- Your right. It's cool that folks can put a custom edge on their knives. My Emerson was zero ground because that is the correct way to do a chisel ground blade. Actually, the zero V grind is is the way to go but these zero grinds are hard for most to sharpen without scratching up the blade.
