I bought an Izula on a sale here in the dealer's section. I decided to take the skin of paint off (a real pita).

After finally removing the paint, I convexed it with course grit sandpaper, starting at 200, through the sheets until I got to a piece w/o a marking on it (over 600) and couldn't feel much, if any grit.

I soaked it in apple cider vineger overnight and darkened it a bit, then tryed mustard which left a few marks that look like rust, then finished by wiping raw apple peels and leaving the juice on it until dry, rince and repeat a few times.

I finished the edge last night freehand on a course diamond stone, then moved to course ceramic, then fine and extra fine ceramics. Stropped the daylights out of it and it cuts like a laser. Zig-zags through copy paper.

Sorry for the crappy pic, I didn't have any paracord so I wrapped it, for now, in a hooded sweatshirt tie-down. Pic is the knife dropped from about 2 feet over the TV tray I was stropping on. :D

You convexed it then sharpened it on stones? I didn't think convex edges could be done on stones.

Maybe I didn't then? I sanded the whole blade down to sharp. After the patina I wanted a silver looking polished edge, so I freehanded the edge to razor sharp and then stropped it again. So whatever you call that, is what it is....:D

Nice, I stripped mine (blade only), convexed the edge and then hand sanded from about 400grit to 1500grit. I didn't force a patina but do hit it with the 1500 sand paper again when it gets real scratched up or dirty/stained. It cuts and slices much better than when it was coated.

PICS or it didn't happen! :D

That's for sure! I still like my 2 black Izulas better, they're prettier to me, but I needed a project to fart around with. :)

I'll try to include it in the pictures I need to take of my new Martin Swinkels leather/kydex Izula sheath. You may have seen that thread already but if not, I can link the thread here when it's done if you'd like. I'm just so behind with life in general now that pictures are low on the list.

Cool, a good patina is nice looking.

Thanks imaginefj, I was hoping for a more mottled look but that steel is very stubborn to get a stain on it. I guess you take what you get?

You know I believe you bro! I always wanted to type that since I find it amusing when other members post it. :D

nice! did my edge from 200-2000. then did a warmed vinegar bath, then a mustard rub, then repeated a few times.

My favorite patina comes from Potatoes. They seem to give a bluish color to the surface. Especially if you get the purple potatoes.

I was going to do the "potatoes" thing but I collect Morgan dollars and read that the softest cleaning of an old grundgy silver dollar, was to gently rub the surfase of the coin on a potato!?? I'll try it, we've got plenty in the house.

I did bake 3 coats of Miltec-1 on my blade though, water beads on it. Maybe alcohol will lift the coating of Miltec-1?

Anybody please?

try soaking kleenex in lemon juice wrapping your blade with it and leaving it overnight, it will smell terrible but will give you a very nice dark and even patina

I just cleaned mine in alcohol and did it an hour ago. I don't know why it would smell bad though?? Seems like I'll have to check on it later and maybe add a few drops to keep it wet until tomorrow afternoon.

I'll snap some pics if it made a notable difference. It may not, since mine was already patina'd and then sealed in Miltec-1.

depending on how long you leave it and how flat the tissue paper is it will turn almost black

I don't want it that dark, better check on it every hour or so.

after about 6 hours the metal starts to smell but i have no idea why, and you can always give it a couple passes with some 2000grit sp if it is too dark;)

haha be careful with the 2000 grit. i wanted to lighten mine a little bit and i took it off completely.
