My next knife takes shape

Keith ...and fellow forumites

Todays progress. Not as much as I had hoped to get done, but progress none the less. I fitted the guard, fitted the handle slabs (mortised tang, handle will have domed pins and pommel/final.) Forged the scrolls into the guard and the curves to get it's final shape. There is cleanup work to do with files and stones before it is ready to etch, but I wanted to show the knife at this point or constuction. The handle is actually sitting on top of the tang in the picture, as I need to make a small adjustment to the angle of the tang in relation to the ricasso. Otherwise the handle is too high and destroys the flow of the knife.

Finished tomorrow or bust

Sean, no I haven't. Maybe someday I will take out a table at the Kamploops knife show just for fun. At this point my collection isn't that large. I have some great knives and am going for quality over quantity. I will probably continue to purchase two or three knives a year as that is all I can afford.

Bailey, looking good. No problem if it takes a little while longer.

Roger, I really like the clip treatment as well. Not on all bowies, but on many I really like the added swedge.

Stephen, I originally thought that amboyna might be too fancy formatching up to wrought iron. I have a feeling that Bailey is going to prove me wrong.

The beauty in that handle material couldn't get much better for this knife, IMO.
That's gorgeous stuff.

Well, in the meantime, here is a pic of a bowie that may be similar, Amboynia burl, scrolled S guard, though damascus, not iron, just a hint of what's to come... :)

Thanks Ari. That has certainly wetted my appetite.

Bailey was away for a few days and figures he will get my knife done in the next couple of days. He is also working on his lighting setup for photography and plans to get some more photos in short order.

I have a question. Looking at the pictures I thought this knive would be a hidden tang. I'm a little confused as to how the handle is going to go on since the handle will be slabs, can someone expain?

Dave

Thanks Jason,

I can see that method may have some advantages over the drilling method. Guess it depends on how good you are at getting the seams right.

Boy, that is going to be some bowie!

When Bailey gets this done, you will probably need a Proton Magnometer to be able to see the seam. :)

So, Bailey let me know today that he wasn't happy with how the handle turned out and that he is doing it again. Should be done tomorrow.

Mu knife is on its way to me and bailey sent me these photos of it in all its finished glory. I'm a happy camper. :D

Yeah, THAT works! Whatever changes were made to the handle were worth it. I love how round and smooth it is, but it transitions to a nice crease to match the guard. Very sexy and unusual.

Keith, you have a great eye for the big ones. Thanks to both of you for sharing this process!

Keith, I think this is a gorgeous Bowie design.
That great clip on the big blade and the beautiful wood handle and guard really look very good on this big knife.
