Hey all,

I pretty sure this has been asked a 1,000 times on this forum, but I couldn't find it. Anyways, I'm making a knife for my fathers 60th birthday and I when I finish the last grind, I dip it in the Ferric for 30 minutes. Almost minutes or so after I completely wipe it off, I notice rust. I did it last night and when I woke this morning it was nothing but a huge ball of rust. His birthday is soon and I have to get past this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's to late for Cerakote.

Thanks again,

Sean

FC will do that....always, .....unless you neutralize the acid with something
like Windex (with ammonia).....wash the blade after.

Why would you etch 01 for 30 minutes???

If you want an etched finish, etch for 1 minute, 3 or 4 times cleaning the blade in between. Then clean and neutralize after, then oil the blade...

On the PH scale you have acids on one side, bases on the other side and neutral in the middle. Ferric Chloride is an acid. You neutralize an acid with a base which would be something like ammonia (in the Windex). So basically you are canceling out (neutralizing) the effects of the acidic PH with an opposite PH on the base side.

Acid vs alkaline .On will neutralize the other . Feric chloride will continue to etch the steel unless stopped [neutralized ] by an alkaline [basic ]solution. Baking soda solution is often used to neutralize acids.

Wash the blade with soap and water, dry. THEN use the Windex. Then oil.

It's a chemical reaction which will continue until you STOP the action.
The acid you are using is having a reaction to the iron in the steel. It will continue to have that reaction until you make it stop.
Did you look up the word "neutralize"?
"render (something) ineffective or harmless by applying an opposite force or effect."
