My Official Introduction To The Traditional Forum With Pics.

Awesome thing to do for your son. Welcome to the forum.

Sons are good to have. They make a father both proud and humble.
Daughters are good to have, too. They teach a father the meaning of unconditional love...until they reach about 12.

Congrats on your son's first birthday!
Good choices on the knives.

Thank you for all the comments and the birthday wishes to my son! He is the light of my life and he has sure changed the way I think and my priorities thats for sure. :)

Welcome Jake,

Those are two lovely knives-good choices.

My advice would be to wax those knives with Renaissance Wax ( google it ) if you are going to store these knives for some time, oil the joints.
Congrats on the birth of your boy.

Can I just use something like Breakfree CLP or Rem Oil on the blades and joints or should I really use that wax or something like it instead of the oil on the actual blades themselves? Also will it hurt to get either one of those oils on the bone?

Great looking knives, and congratulations to your son. Great way to make an introduction thread too. I'm pretty new here, and I've only invested in one Rough Rider so far, but I definitely have the traditional bug. After looking at all the patterns and reading the stories and specs. I'm pretty sure I'll be around for awhile

Thank you! Here are a couple more pictures. I'm thinking for me I want a #6 Pemberton in ebony, a #33 Conductor in ebony or Apple Red Jigged Bone and a #76 Outlaw Jack with the Yellow Rose Bone. Those are next on my list anyway.

... AND?

Every single time I see pictures of that Rotten Banana 66 Jack it makes me start hunting for one again! ...It's one of the best looking GEC knives I have ever seen if not the the best.

Congratulations on a most timely grab. I'm glad you got it! :)

Congratulations, too, on your son, and on the fine knives on his behalf.

I was just going to say the same thing! Congrats on snagging the rotten banana bone 66.

Oh yeah, nice Calf Ropers too. Every time I see one of those blood red bone 66s I want one again.

Jake,

Congrats big time all the way around! Those two are great finds for sure. And congrats on landing that Rotten Jack!

Peter

Thank you and ya I was pretty happy when I stumbled on AKC's for sale post last night! Almost couldn't believe my eyes. :) It will be the knife I carry to the office on Fridays when I can wear jeans and out to dinner with the lady stuff like that I'm thinking.

Hi there my friend, I use mineral oil on my knives-because that doesnt colour the bone if the knife is oiled before storage, BUT what I find in our atmosphere in Auckland , New Zealand it can be very hot-yet the humidity can get up there.
I have had dissapointing results, because when reading Bernard Levines threead on the use of oil....he does not like the use of other oils because of the staining effects, but he does recommend the use of Mineral oil.
I have used Mineral oil and plenty of it, then carefullu sealed my knives in Wax papers, then wrapped carefully in rags etc, only to find that rust spots have damaged some of my Mint knives=heartbeaking.
I use the Renaissance Wax Polish now, as this is used by the British Meuseum etc, but I have only just started this, but it does seem to give a good thorough protective coat.
Hey..in you ambient atmosphere you have-you may have no problems, and I am sure a collector in your area will help, the only rerason as to why I suggested the oil etc, is becuase I think you are doing something really awesome for your boy, and I would hate for you to open the knives up in years to come, and find they have perished slightly.
Please dont let me worry you, the guys here know a hell of a lot more than me, and I hope they will come in as well with advice.
Good luck, and again congartulations

Ya I looked that Renaissance Wax Polish up and it looks like good stuff. They sure are proud of it too I think the cheapest I found it was about $16 or $17 shipped. I live about 5 min from the ocean on the coast of Oregon so the biggest issue we have here is the salty air but we don't have humidity issues because all the wind blows it away i think lol. I know on my polished Becker BK-2 I keep a coat of Breakfree CLP on it and it maintains the polished 1095 blade perfectly but I don't have to worry about bone or anything like that with that knife. I might just have to order up some of that Renaissance Wax Polish and give it a whirl. From what I've read a little bit goes a long way with that stuff. Thank you for the heads up! I knew I needed to keep something on them just wasn't sure exactly what would be best. The Rem Oil might be a little safer than the Breakfree because of the cleaners that are in CLP but again I'm not positive about that. I'll look into it some more.

That is funny how your path went from modern folder to traditional. I started with traditional, and then into modern folders, now into both, but traditionals are my first love. Welcome to BF, the greatest forum on the net, and also to Trad sub forum, which is the best of BF
