My old 112...

thanks DM thats sounds exactly right! I first thought it might be grinders that did it when first cutting the blank stocks. Do they still use these machines in the picture?

I have to put a [disclaimer] on my E-BAY post for knives for sale that all the SURVIVAL equipment is "not included" KNIFE & SHEATH only....LOL

DM, That thing looks like it could mess you up! if your not careful thats for sure! I hope they supply you with KEVLAR GLOVES...LOL how many RPMS can those hamster wheels produce 10,000 20,000-30,000 RPMS?
and thank you DM for the answer......

Most run at a set rpm, 1300-1500, something like that range. The better ones run higher 3000rpm on Baldor. Others are adjustable (variable speed). Mine is like this. It's capable of programming. I can program in a range of speed. Thus, I can quickly change the rpm I'm working at, depending on what I desire to do. i.e. lop off more metal, sand slower, not eat up much soft metal, ect.. Sometimes I work it with a knobby tire or smooth wheel. Yes, I do have kevlar gloves and sometimes I wear them. DM

Both of my home buffing wheel runs at 3450 rpm, 1/4 hp, I'm an idiot for not getting one's with a adjustable speed control, $$$$ problem, LOL but I have a heavy duty foot control I'm going to hook up with it. Yes I have seen those Knobby tires on you tube. So DM you get good results then, whats thats material made of?

DM have you ever gotten to use a double wheel hollow grinder? or is that before your time? I just love watching you tube videos of all the different grinders out their for the home workshop......some are very pricey....

The wheels I have are made of rubber. Like that on a Goodyear tire with a alloy hub. The grip the belt real well. The double wheel models were before my time. For me the slower speeds give me straighter lines. With high speeds, one little slip and you have to start all over with new bar stock. Which can get expensive. I've seen knife makers get good results with them but they were very experienced. DM

I'm surprised they are made of rubber? almost all products today are synthetic compounds, with 3% to 6% rubber, David you must of heard of VIBRAM soles right? I worked at the orginal factory in North Brookfield MA where VIBRAM soles were made, they have been bought out buy and Italian Corp. The factory also makes other soles for other brands, but all their [soles] now are made of synthetic formulas [only] VIBRAM has any reall rubber in the mixture...but like I said its only 3% 6% max...except Military Soles. I also worked at place called REED PLASTICS running plastic extruders & pelletizers thats make the pellets for Plastic Injection Molding machines etc. [Nylon] is the GOLD standard but the diritive of Nylon and waste are P.C.B.S. Just One of the reasons I'm not fond of plastic and knifes, I want good natural earth materials! and what the iron age brought us. Also if you watch RACING tires are also mostly {chemical compounds] not rubber anymore on the tracks for F-1 an NASCAR & bike racing are the testing grounds for their compound tires....very little rubber from rubber trees maybe 6% like the shoes soles.

Sincerely, thank you David for sharing your experiences & knowledge....its much appreciated!

DM, The Trees are safe? LOL
I use to work on a tree crew too! MALTBY TREE Stoughton MA
You can't cut down trees in Cambridge MA and if you burn in a wood stove or in a fireplace they will have the WOOD BURNING POLICE knocking at your door, and you will be fined under city ordinances. I couldn't believe it myself. Actually You can burn wood in the fireplace but it can't be from trees that have been cut down in Cambridge essentially, and if the tree has come down then you can burn it, but you need to hide it from your neighbors or they will shun you for burning wood. LOL I witnessed it on a tree job we did not far from HARVARD SQAURE....LOL

I have a few Buck 112s, This is the one I carried while in the Navy on the USS Ranger (CV61). It is stamped BUCK *112*. I drilled a hole in the back bolster in order to put a thong through it when using it while working on the mast or near the side. I've never given it a "spa" cleaning - I only wipe it down with an oily rag and sharpen when necessary.

Nice grain! so ModocEd, how was your 1st trip over equator.....did they have the King Neptune's celebration? Never laughed so hard seeing my Uncles photos of the men celebrating on the Entrepid after they crossed the equator and the tank of what ever they threw guys in....LOL Great looking working knife.....

Yep, I went through the Over-the-Line ceremony/initiation and am a "Shellback". Great times.

Modoc ED. LOL.....thanks for the response about the eqautor, and sharing your story about your 112. If knives could only talk, as I always say. Now the Submariners are another whole story! from what I have heard about their contest about hygiene, they a title for when they cross over too for their initiation...I just can't remember it.
