Greetings fellas - quite a few years ago I bought one of the first Atlas Mini Forges - all carbon steel, burner with no regulator. In all honesty, I was not real impressed with it and it has been sitting under my workbench, unused for many years now. I see Atlas sells a 30K burner upgrade with regulator now for $50. Do any of you forgers have experience with the upgrade in an old Atlas? I really hate to send good money after bad.

V/R,

TK

What didn't you like about it?

I have a newer atlas with a 30k burner and I use it quite often. It's slow compared to my big forge but just sips fuel in comparison. I think it's great for it's size.

Same here.

I love my little guy. I used just over 1 bbq canister last year and that's with playing with a bunch of other stuff too. At some point I will want something bigger but it's awsome what a little 18 lb forge can do.

SSLOOOOWWWW - I guess that's why there's a burner upgrade :)

I think that's your old burner. I don't know what that is exactly or what the design was exactly for that vintage but it looks like a miniature weed burner with a flow control and no pressure regulation.

The new 30k burner with 0-20 psi regulator should not only be more heat but more efficient. If you'd like, I could take a video of how fast mine heats up a knife to forging temp.

Yep, it's the old "weed burner" with no regulator. I appreciate the offer, but I'm going to go ahead and upgrade. I think I'll be happier with it based on the input from the fellas here. The 30K upgrade exists for a good reason I'll bet. :)

OK, here's an offer for you: If you'd ship that one to me, I'd ship you my last non-stainless version with new burner, regulator, stainless front and rear plates and toolrest. The only caveat is that you can't clean any of the rust off of that old one. I want it just the way it is, for a before and after type of thing.

Man, that old torch head burner is a blast from the past. Mount it on a plaque and hang it on the wall as a bladesmithing antique.
I think you will be pleased with the newer burner. Charles always offers an upgrade to his old customers at his cost ... and it really is cost.

Consider it a done deal :)

One old model, rusty Atlas forge is on its way - you should get it Monday:)

I just got yours painted and welded, not in that order. Luckily I still had a can of paint and bricks that fit. I should get it shipped out next week. You'll have to send me your address.
