my one gripe with spyderco

Joe, I don't think I am from your generation either, but common sense does trickle through to some generations ;)
Someone could just as easily cut themselves using a knife as the could swaping blades:

Engage common sense instead of irrational arguement ;)
You asked a question and it was answered in gory, honest detail. If you want to "have a gripe", at least try and make it a valid one, mmmkay?

I never though off the Para2 as a mule till you said it. Makes perfect sense. Plus, it's a fitting platform due to blade with and such with the thin blade. Let's you take full advantage of the high end steels.

I guess if your only gripe with Spyderco is that they only push new blade steels and designs about 3 times more than the next best company. Then I guess it's not too bad

I do kind of like the idea of a "folder mule" though we know they sort of already do this, just split up between a few good folders. Is there any reason they couldn't bring the Tenacious design to their US made knives, and then implement different steels?? Most people I know think it's pretty darn good ergonomically and visually (maybe if they just straighten the spin like I've seen some people do, instead of it curving), and the only qualm seems to be blade steel. If China can produce and then ship out the Tenacious for ~$30, I don't see why we can't see a US made Tenacious starting at about ~$40-$45 base price, then the price of whatever better steels are provided.

I think the majority of the aficionados are happy with the US made Manix2, Para2, Military, and Mule fixed blades. As for the Japanese models, we have the Delica, Endura, and Stretch. That's 7 models that are being used as platforms. They are proven designs, they are comfortable to carry, and have a long history of functionality. I'd love more Military models in various steels myself. I could really go for a Military with Alabama Damascus, a potpourri of carbon steels all blended together. ;)

What about all the overhead involved? Medical, dental, 401k, stock options, salary, etc?

What about the cost of machining and heat treating exotic steels?

What about the production schedules involved for regular models?

What about R&D?

Lots of stuff gets swept under the rug so quickly.

First off all let me say I think people are taking "gripe" too far. Spyderco is my favorite production company and I own more spydies then any other company. Second ,how dare I suggest sage for example, a knife that's change handle materials and lock every knife also change steels per knife . Geez I guess I am just an arrogant, ignorant whipper snaper .sorry! This was just about me saying the same knife ,with the same lock and same handle material gets boring and I think my way would be a better way of introducing new steels

No worries spydusse. It's just that so many people really don't know how limited the high end knife market is. I read somewhere on here that we only make up about 1-3% across the board. People also think that Spyderco has something like a 1 million sq foot facility where robots are cranking out knives 24/7. I'm with you as far as wanting more designs, I started asking long before you were a member here. They are coming. What I posted were the answers I kept seeing, not just from Spyderco, but from Kershaw/ZT, and other companies. The only way to make these things happen is by showing enough interest and offering up economically viable options.

Edit: I own a few Spydercos too, here is about 30% of my Spyderco arsenal.

I don't see a Gayle Bradley in there, and not even a single fixed blade? Blasphemy!

You are not keeping things economically viable enough. :D

I have no problem with the Para and Manix being the 2 vehicles for test driving superior blade steels. I would like to know what the next Para sprint is going to be. Is there any truth to the M4 w/ Blue G-10 rumor?

The 2nd Chaparral is plannd for a different steel.

We are considering uising US steels in China.

I will consider your Mule Team folder. The lock would be an issue.

Awesome, so the chaparall will have alternate handle materials and steels for the first two at least. That is just too cool ,you can count me in for everyone. I love the looks of that knife! I also just want to say thank you Sal for keeping so in touch with your fan base here ,I'm sure you're a busy man and I appreciate it. Why I love spyderco

I'm gonna bump this cause I think a lot of people missed what Sal said . We need a Sal bombshell post sticky here lol

Should be possible. Böker makes a lockback with interchangable blades.....
