My only fixed blade (is this decent?)

What's wrong with fixed blades? They're a lot stronger than a folder, easier to clean, and can be used for larger tasks like chopping etc. I like folders and carry them daily but when heading into the outdoors I reach for a fixed blade every time.

You explained it much better than me :) If I could have only ONE tool while camping/backpacking etc. It would be a fixed blade knife.

Well I bit the bullet and actually ended up going with the Browning. Unfortunately for me, I have a feeling it wont be long before I start getting that itch to pick up a more reasonably sized knife (ie. that Teddy, or something similar) since the Browning has a 10" blade which is pretty huge.

My poor wallet :o

Your poor wallet? You'll get no sympathy here as most have suffered and continue to suffer from the very same thing. ;)

A big +1 to that. I was about to ask the OP if he really wanted a sharp knife....

The Bark River with the mesquite handle is really nice looking for $185. That one has my pick.

Ok, I think I'll be going for the Bark River...

Now to just pick out a handle..

So hard to choose.
you might want to think about the fact that that blade has no guard
wouldn't want it to bite you when you work with it
responding to your original post
is it a muela or a fury
muela makes ok knives from spain
fury makes cheap imports from china

When I saw your preferences I directly wanted to advise you a Bark River Rougue :D
You might already know they have a lot more models:
An extremely versitale (but smaller) Bark river is the Canadian special.

At the other hand DONT EVER BUY BARKIES, they are very very adictive :D

The Fallkniven A2 also is a very good knife (Not a single bad review  )

If you're still deciding for a handle I would suggest to go with the black G10/ yellow spacers/ brass solid pins ;)

The blade is approx 8" in length, with what looks like rosewood scales. It's a Muela and the blade has Fury and 90026 written on it.

I've had it for 10 years now, and it has served me well so in that sense it's good, but I haven't really been into knives until recently so know very little about it besides that :) It's survived chopping wood, a Tom Brown Jr. survival camp, etc.

Good knife?

Muela makes a cheaper as well as higher grade models. My Dad bought a Arocho Bowie made by them and it's got a 9" high carbon steel blade, with a full pinned tang, brass cap and guard. It is in their higher end model knives and they are made in Spain. Not a bad knife and it seems to have excellent strength and edge retention.
here's a few of their present day upper models

Dude, Ingold, I'm from Santa Barbara! No knife suggestions, I just felt like saying that.

Oh no!! why did you show me that list!!

You have made a new enemy (my wife ;))

There are some beautiful blades there calling my name :D

Excellent advice from every direction.

You literally cannot lose with a Barky.

For a different, but equally valid, vision of the fixed blade knife at a reasonable cost, see Fallkniven Knives. The A2 is a great knife ... and they have other fine models.

You might also want to glance at Ranger, Fehrman, and the Busse brands (Scrapyard, Swamprat, and Busse itself). Some are remarkably inexpensive and others are quite expensive. They are all excellent knives.

Happy researching! :D [Heck, the research is at least half the fun...]

...and then there are all the wonderful customs!!!

I'd have to disagree, based on my experiences with the Rogue. No guard, but I've used my First Run one hard without it ever slipping.

If you like fixed blade knives, want a nice hefty chopper that gonna last a few lifetimes, guaranteed:

Busse Combat has some of the most well rounded knives available. A bit pricey, but they are worth it.

Might I suggest a Gossman Tusker? This is my baby and it is one of the finest fixed blades I've ever owned. Really functional and beautiful at the same time.

You won't be disappointed.
