My Opinel no. 6 100% friction.

I never had such problem, but if I were you, instead of sharpening the blade to remove metal, I would rather file the correspondent part of the handle (in the "pit" where the blade stays when it's closed). There's enough wood in the handle to allow you to do that, and preserve the tip of your knife.

I agree that the locking ring on an Opinel is not strictly necessary, but I have got into the habit of always using the locking ring on my Opinels.

I think that the Opinel locking ring is a masterpiece of engineering, simple, direct, and easy to use.

In my mind simple is always better.

i use the lock on my opinel.
frequently i use it as a field/garden knife for things like cutting honeysuckle vine out of some desirable vegetation. sometimes the desirable vegetation is a dense hedge or thicket where there is lots of opportunity for an unlocked blade to press shut against a branch or something.
had i grown up in a culture which has a tradition of friction folding knives then i may well not feel the need to lock my opinel. lol

Does anyone have a problem with their opinel tip dulling very quickly due to it rubbing the spine? Ive got an opinel #6 carbon steel and i would love it except for the fact that the tip dulls almost instantly as soon as i close it, ive sharpened it multiple times and it does the same thing. I would love to carry it but a dull knife really makes me mad.

Are you sure that the blade hitting inside the wood handle is causing this? It would seam that a sharp piece of steel would make room for itself after cutting the wood that it is hitting away. I wouldn't think that wood would be dulling hardened steel like that.

Another idea might be to insert a piece of string or shoelace into the blade slot to make a softer bladestop?

I've thinned the blades on both of mine ('carbone' and stainless), and have noticed the 'carbone' blade to be a little more fragile and vulnerable to dings & such. I don't know if it's actually been dulled inside the handle, but I take precautions in closing it, to hopefully minimize that risk. I think Opinel's stainless blades are hardened to a somewhat higher RC (Sandvik specs the steel up to ~59 RC), and I haven't noticed the same vulnerability in that one.
