Today was my first day working in the deli and bakery at a local grocery store. As a full-time college student, it's a rough feeling knowing that I have so many things to balance at once, especially since it is my first "real" job. To be completely honest, it's very overwhelming.
After getting my uniform on and talking with my supervisor, I was instructed to open some boxes of meat and cheese and move the items into the cooler. I looked at the pile of boxes and reached into my pocket to find... NOTHING! I had forgotten my multi-tool, a hefty SOG PowerLock, and all the knives in the deli are only for use on food items.
As I struggled with ripping through the boxes with my bare hands, I could see that all eyes were on me, the smart college boy who's just there to earn a few bucks. Nervously, I reached into my pocket to adjust my cell phone, and I felt a sharp point: My P-38!
My uncle gave it to me on Christmas day saying: "Put this with your keys; you never know when you'll need it. I've used mine to this day since Vietnam."
Needless to say, I used that little can opener to open and tear down boxes, open vacuum-sealed items, and a plethora of other duties. In fact, I got my first assigned task done within the first forty-five minutes of being there!
Everyone seemed quite impressed that I was picking up on things so quickly. By the middle of my five-hour shift, I was already handling the slicers and helping customers.
And of course, I won't forget to put my multi-tool on my belt tomorrow, and I plan to buy a Victorinox Farmer with my first paycheck to keep in my pocket at all times. Yet, no matter what I carry in my pockets or on my belt, that little P-38 goes with me. I'll never know when I might need it again!
