Maybe - just looked like an ordinary surplus canteen to me. Mine looked like that back in the 1990s, and I'm sure it was before they even knew what BPA is.
The bigger issue was that it would retain flavors and odors.
I'm a complete nalgene convert now... those things are awesome and nearly indestructible.
