Well it was a not so good and a great day all rolled into one,A little girl was riding her new bike today up my street I was in my front yard washing my truck when I heard a scream.
I watched a rottweiler chase this little girl on her bike,I ran out to the street and got between the girl and the dog and the dog grabbed my hand,First off we have discussed what to do when a dog attacks,It hurt so f****n bad I cant tell ya I started to yell and punch this sob in the face, and was also telling the girl to get away quick. She was screaming and riding away,im punching this dog in the face and he finally let go,but to go after the girl.

My hand had a big hole in it and some small ones near the edge of my hand.As the dog was going after the girl I yelled at my brother to let rage out NOW.My brother opend the gate and let Rage my pit bull out and rage grabbed the rott by the head about 5 feet before he got to the little girl.I was in so much pain.I felt helpless,Rage killed the Rottweiler,My neighbor got some wrap and bandaged my hand. After He fixed me up I look for the little girl she is sitting on the curb with my Pit bull who is licking her face and his own wounds, all she kept saying was your doggy saved my life, her mother came over to pick her up and when she seen rage she said oh my god a pitbull the little girl said mom he saved my life. She thanked me but not my dog who loves people just hates other dogs.I was so pissed about that but rage knows he did good and I thanked him and so did her father who came by earlier and said he now has a new best friend RAGE.I will type more later but my hand is killing me,Thank god no rabies or broken bones just a hole the size of a nickel on the top of my hand.
P.S sorry so long
Moral of this true story never judge a book by its cover my pitbull saved a life.

Nice jobs Featherstone & Rage. Now sue the Rottweiler owner and buy yourself a few new trucks.

Take care,
bug

A very good story Featherstone! Glad to hear the child is ok as well as Rage. That little girl will never forgot you or Rage, as well as her family and friends. Pit bulls have this negative image in the public, thanks to the bad press! A pit bull is one of the most loyal and intelligent breeds around. They love people, and like you said, don't like other dogs!

I don't think I'd name my pitbull "Rage". "Fluffy" might go over better, in today's legal environment.

You're lucky to have gotten away with such light injuries. One of my Basset Hounds was attacked by a pair of Rotties a few years ago, and he needed *lots* of stitches. Fortunately, Basset Hounds were bred to be able to hunt badger, boar and wolves, so the little guy didn't seem to notice his injuries much.

I know i picked the wrong name for him in todays society,im actually the only one who calls him that all the kids and neighbors call him pumba the boar from the lion king, cause he looks just like him.I couldnt ask for a better companion.Bae glad you basset is okay I know how he feels.

Pumba - now *that's* a great name for a pit bull.

We're thinking of getting one when one of our Bassets passes away in a few years. Can they swim at all?

(The Basset survived the Rottweilers fine, except for the stitches. He clamped onto the neck of one of the attackers, sucked in his little legs like a turtle, and hung on for the ride. I had to pry him off. He's still got a bad case of "Frankenstein butt" from the stitches, though.)

As the father of 2 young girls I say THANK YOU!I had a neighbor who let his rottweiler roam free, well after 2 days of seeing it at my kids bus stop we had a "talk",he gave me the standard dog owner answer of "he's a nice dog".

I told him that the bus driver was giving me dirty looks 'cause I was waiting for the bus in my garage with a 12 ga.;) (really just had a glock under my shirt).Anyhow he did the right thing and started to chain it.:)

FEATHERSTONE,
Congratulations! You might want to have that hand looked at, dog bites often get infected. - Frank.

You might also think about filing a police report, while you can still document your injuries. That way, if your neighbor decides to harass you over the death of her dog, you'll be ahead of the game...

Congrats on your save! Also - I support your calling the police and filing a report - then call a lawyer. You and your insurance company shouldn't have to be liable for your medical expenses.

Mike

Definitely file a report with the police, and probably should talk to a lawyer in anticipation of a law suit (against you). As a dog owner myself (um... er... Rottweiler. But she's a nice dog! Actually, she is, but nevermind that), this is so wrong in so many ways. :( But I'm glad your Pit Bull saved the girl and took out the ragin' Rotty. Both dogs have such a bad reputation, undeserved on both counts. :( But just from reading your side of the story (not even getting into how it could be twisted), call the police and talk to a lawyer.

Hey guys I called the police and they did come out. They took down a report of what happend and they also talked to the little girl, after they talked to the girl they came back and said dont worry about nothing.
They went to talk to the owner who was pissed but not at me or my dog at his own dog.He said he got the dog training but it didnt work and he dug under the fence and got out,The owner came buy and asked if we were okay I said im okay and rage is in playing with the puppy. He said if you go to the doctor or rage to the vet I will pay for everything. So everything is going pretty good except the hand is sore but its healing.
Thank you all for your concerns, your friend in blades.RYAN CROWE

Good, Ryan. Very good!

It sounds like the owner didn't care alotabout his dog..... Although, even if he did, he did the right thing by you now, I guess. Hopefully he was sincere, and not just trying to save his ass.

I am glad the little girl, you and your dog are all ok. It is nice to know heros still exist.

I have a question about this type of attack. Take this same situation, the Rotty is bent on attacking someone, and obviously out of control. What legal ramifications would I have if I were to use my knife on the dog and kill it or imobilize it.

I have three small children and there is a "friendly" Rotty that lives across the street. I have often thought about that same situation, and if that dog was going after one of my kids, I would not hesitate to stop the dog anyway I could.

I pray it never happens...

Clay

What a shame that such a fantastic dog as a Rottie has such a crappy rep. I have owned a male for 5 yrs now, he is as gentle as a lamb. He loves the kids next door to us and plays very gently with them. However, I have seen him when a stranger comes to the house and he isnt the only one with his hackles up! I was bit once by a Huskie and that hurt like hell for 2 days, if a Rott gets hold of you I can imagine how it feels!

What we have to remember here folks is that its the nature of the beast. The Rott probably saw the little girl as some kind of threat to either himself or his home.

Remember people have killed millions of their own species over something as debatable as religion or colour of skin. The dog for all his errors that day was probably acting for what he thought was in the best interest of himself or owner.

With all that said, I'm glad that thgings turned out all right. I'd say Rage was due a steak tonight!

Think back to my first read of the post, my first thought was I hope the Rotty wasn't chasing the girl in play mode, like my Rotty has been known to do. If she does that, she will stop pretty quickly if/when I tell her to (pretty much immediately), or if she actually catches the kid (can't actually recall that ever happening) (yeah, chasing has happened with the neighborhood kids, and initially scared them, until I introduced them; then they love her to death, play with her, run and chase, etc. ALWAYS supervised, however!!!!!). Anyway, my first though was, "I hope the Rotty wasn't just trying to play with the little girl and she freaked out." Then the Rotty found itself in the fight of its life against Rage, and lost its life.

HOWEVER!; based on the history with the dog that featherstone posted, that doesn't sound like it was the case. Plus, I don't think a good, happy, playing Rotty would have bit featherstone like this one apparently did.

But, it was just thoughts like that that led me to post that he should definitely call the police, lest someone turn it around and inside out, so that Rage came across as the bad dog.

I am new here, and so hope no one minds my joining in.

First off Cudo's to Rage and RYAN CROWE. A side note to you sir. get medical attention. Time is getting a tad late, and infection can be a very real problem.

ClayC, Sir if you are at all worried about the dog across the street, request the dog be restrained to the property where it lives. If it should enter your property and you can determine threatening behavior, you are entitled to do what ever needed to defend yourself and you children. But off your property might suggest something other.
I am not sure a knife would be the best thing to use, unless that is all you have at the time. If I was to sit in a court of law, and had to pass judgement, I would be very curiose about this knife, and why you had it so handy.. I am not trying to start a war, but trying to get you to see it from another view. Say you were doing yard chores and had a rake, then I would say you had about enough weapon with that to stop most dogs, and perhaps kill it. You do not want to look as if you have had it in for the dog for a long time if charges were to be brought up against you. Personally I do not think that....

rockspyder, As a dog owner you should realize that you must have 100% controll of your dog, or you both will get into a mess sooner or later. If you can't see to it that you have this controll, then you must restrain the animal when you can't have the controll. That is not always so simple to do however; as I am sure you know.

I have had 2 Great Danes, and so I know some of the problems that can happen between dogs and people that are not familar with dogs... just letting you know that I like dogs generally. At this time I do not have a dog as my life style does not allow the time needed for it, and I hope to again later in life.

I believe that dogs reflect on their owners, and for the most part wish to please the owners. The problems come when the owners themselves are a problem. Here where I live there is such a problem. It is the owner of the dog, which is a German Shepard that has some type of ego problem. This mans allows the dog free rein, and this dog charges every one living or visting on the farm. I have repeatedly asked to have a run made, and requested the dog be tied. My answer is "He is a guard dog, and needs to be loose to guard" This is said with a red neck attitude so far as I can tell. I have told the owner point blank several times that I will kill the dog, and sue if I or my wife gets bitten, and in that order. I can pet this dog, but when I come or go in a car it barks and charges. The dog interfears with delivery personell like gas, and UPS. The dogs owner is not the owner of the land here, but neither am I, so I can't make rules.

I wonder what to do myself at times, perhaps some of you have an idea.
I am not afraid of the dog, but have no wish to be bitten either. What I would like most is that the dog be restrained to an area, but that idea seems to go no where with the owner. Anyway this is getting a tad long.....maybe I need to be restrained as well. Mac aka W. McKay

Hi Mac, have you checked the leash laws where you live? Even pretty rural places often have them. If there are leash laws, you can report that this dog is loose to the proper authorities. It's not just a danger to others that this dog is loose, it's a danger to the dog, who might get hit by traffic, so I wouldn't feel bad reporting it.

Burke, Thank you for the reply. Yes there is a lease law here, but I do not wish to escalate the present situation, which I think would be what happens. Sure a dog officer would show and make some demands, and probably the dog would be well looked after for a few days. After the dust settled under the rug, I believe the dog would then be released, and another call would need to take place, for yet a repeated action. Each time the owner getting angery at me for it. After all it is his dog, and he knows best. Just ask him!

Some folks just will not listen to reason, and I believe this gent is one of them. He complains about all sorts of things and will go out of his way to tell any one possible! That is me if I happen to be working on any out door project, the gas delivery man or other that braves the dog. He is a logger, and I suggested that the dog go with him in the woods each day. But alas no, that is not the thing to do, as who then will protect the apt that the guy lives in? And further more the dog does not like getting into the cab of a loggin truck!

And also "he won't bit you" But "If he does it is because you deserved it"

Hell I live here too! I sometimes feel like I am living in a third world country AAAAAAAhhhhhhhhh. What I need to do is think of a way with no rules to get him to take controll of the dog, with out having any effect on his big man ego.... I don't mean to blasting him, but I can't explain otherwise.... his wife is "The wife" his daugter of about 18 months is the "My daughta'" I think he is a 4th grade grad, which believe me is more than enough Larnin fer anyone. He very often forgets his "readin glasses" when he comes over here to ask if I can make out the words in this or that...

I am begining to think:
"What we have heya is a failure to communicate."

How do I feed info into a ego, and get something accomplished? Mac aka W.McKay

I totally agree with you Mac. Or at least the paragraph that appears to be addressed to me. I had to look back at my post to see why your paragraph appeared to be a bit of a reprimand to me. In fact, i had to read my post a couple of times. Then I realized that apparently I didn't actually write all of what I meant to. Look back at the first lines of my post, to the underlined/italicized part, to see what I left out. I think it will then be more apparent what I was talking about. :)

Don't know where my head was before......
